It was fully wound but I was careful not to overwind. I fully wound it this morning when I set the time at 0700.
Fully wound is when the crown won't turn anymore. Anything less is not fully wound.

As mentioned prior, wind it fully 1st count your winds till you feel the end.
Obviously, don't force it pass that point.
If worried about over wind, next time count your winds and one less than a full wind should be good.
Run it for a few weeks and keep a little log. Should run for 36 to 40 hours on a full wind, I would think.
Check manuel, for that information. If it continues to be losing & you are out of posible outside interferance like magnetic interferances or power reserves, send it back.
Good choice, Omega bought the Co-axial escapement from Goeoge Daniels and are running with it.
It is more of a marine chronometer design. Should keep time comprable to a Quartz if set correct in therory.
I have not worked on one, if it were my personal watch & out of waranty I would look in side the mechanics of it. BUT, I have bench expirence & don't recommend it.
To repair or service watches, one must be border line for pyscho-ward IMO.
Post your results if it settles down & you tame it, or send er back for adjustments.
If you have'nt read Mark Twain's commentary on his pocket watch, you should.
Everyone with any interest in watches, it should be a mandatory read. Be seated when reading it.
That and Adam & Eve's diaries translated by Mark Twain. My sugested reads for your 50th B-day.

Is that the official diagnosis for @Archer and other watch repairers here on OF?

Did you fully wind it?

Let's say that the watch was half wound, could it possibly be the reason why it lost so many minutes?

The group here have an appreciation for what it takes, I hope.
The general public don't have a clue. When my mentor demonstrated how to set a beat & replace a balance staff said, " Hope you have nothing to do for the next 5 years of your life!"
Which is about right, but you never stop learnig or seeing another problem.
8 weeks just on hairsprins for example. That is just in the flat & round, not sure on overcoils.
Heading for the door....?

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions. I have now had the watch for 4 days and been winding each morning. I counted about 28-30 turns to fully wind each day and either I caught the crown or the watch wasn't fully wound (though I cannot see why even it it was half wound it would loose time) that caused the timekeeping error.

I'm happy to report it's gaining only 1.5secs/day since setting on Wednesday morning it is 6 secs fast so well within tolerances for the specification.

I'm more than happy with the Speedmaster and I've wanted one for a long time. As a pilot there can only be one choice in my opinion. If it was good enough for those guys with the right stuff it's good enough for me.
