Hello OF members. I am Ken, from the UK, and am fairly new to collecting watches, having come to the hobby only 3-4 years ago. This forum has been brilliant for researching and for advice/opinion. I have been keen to buy a MkII Speedmaster for a little while and wanted to ask your opinion on the watch below.

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/omega/speedmaster-mark-ii--id22963321.htm

To my mind, the case and case back look ok, the watch has clearly seen some action and has scratches etc, but looks unpolished. The movement (to my untrained eye) is missing two fixing screws to the case, but doesn't show any obvious rust or corrosion. The watch is apparently keeping good time and the chronograph functions and resets.

However, the dial looks pretty 'granular' and I don't know if this is natural ageing. Initially, I wondered if black paint has been reapplied, but the hour markers and text do not look like the dial has been repainted to me, but interested to hear what other members think. The hands do look like they have been repainted (and not particularly well). The bezel too looks to have suffered a bit and the numbers 110 and 120 seem to have been ?repainted with the same paint as the hands.

Watch comes on a 1171 bracelet with 175 end links.

The watch is in the UK (bonus, as don't need to worry about VAT/import duties) and the guy will accept £1800.

My thoughts are that it is in fair condition, it needs a service and some new hands, but seems an honest example of a Mk II. Price is possibly a little high, given condition... but I'm unsure and keen to hear other thoughts... many thanks.

Zombie thread alert!

Just interested to see that this is an 1171 bracelet on a Mark II.

A few Mark II owners have said that when purchasing them from dealers back in the day, that there was a variety of bracelets as an option, not necessarily the 1162 and 1159 that are most commonly seen.

Thanks @Ascalon for re-kindling the zombie post! I didn't end up buying this watch, but another MkII that was quite a bit cheaper. It's a bit of a bruiser, but unpolished and the radial case brushing is all there under a ton of scratches! It came on a 1162 bracelet, but I've subsequently bought the Uncle version 1162 as it is a much better fit and has a decent milled clasp.
It's a funny thing. I lusted over the Mark II for months back in 2022, but actually, now I have one, I don't wear it as much as I should. I do like the design, but I find the case 'top heavy' to wear and have gravitated more towards watches that are 36-38mm (vintage KS/GS is my thing at present). Onwards on the collecting journey...

The second one looks like a pretty clean example. The dial looks great and a new crystal isn't that much, makes a world of difference. Getting the case refined would freshen up the look. Even though a little top heavy, it isn't bad comparatively.

Grabbed mine last year mainly because of the tropical dial and the case shape intrigued me as it's something different, normally don't see it. Seller had it serviced, new crystal, and case refinished. Came on an original Holzer bracelet which is extremely comfortable.

@ken_hodson Well wear, mate!

That is indeed a cracker, fair play.
Despite not getting on at all with the original 1162 that came on my 72 Mark II, I have been tempted by the US 1162.

I have a US 1171 that is a lovely quality set, and I even found a pair of vintage 735 end links that set it off beautifully to fit to the Mark II, but they are all left in the shade by a Forstner 1450 with custom end links and a 1498 clasp. 😀
