Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon - Hands on, no chipping

I've been noticing I don't have to adjust the Dsotm at all and after adding a few more weeks of measurements, it seems to be averaging +1.4s/day, way better than the +2.2s I measured in the first days after getting it.

This is really great compared to what I was used to with my other automatic. Guess the 9300 can still keep time. 👍

Summer is coming, I'm tempted to get that rubber strap.

How do you find the strap for hot weather? Comparable to a full leather strap?

Looks gorgeous. Really the first time I've paid the Dark Side of the Moon version any attention, but I really like its slick appearance.

The leather is really smooth and the whole strap is a bit more flexible than other full-leather straps. I've learned to love the DSOTM strap, it's really very well made and at least on the outside it seems to be quite resistant to dust, despite being fully black. The foldover clasp is also perfectly machined and the whole thing closes perfectly like a high precision mechanism.

Haven't gone through many hot days with it, but I'd say that nothing beats rubber for summer. The inner soft leather makes it comfy but will never be adequate. Plus I'm sure you should avoid getting the strap wet because of the inside, which probably rules out beach or pool fun.

Something I've noticed while alternating between the DSOTM and my stainless steel watch is how they feel on the wrist temperature-wise. The steel one feels colder (and heavier) while the DSOTM is light but feels much warmer.

This is probably because ZrO2 ceramic is a strong insulator, that combined with the sapphire back means that the watch isn't working as a heat dissipator pulling heat and cooling your wrist as a metal one would. I wouldn't call this good or bad, but it's just a characteristic. It might make it a bit more pleasant to put on and wear on cold days, tho...

Something else I noticed I like is the sound of the rotor on the 9300, well, the sound of the whole movement. But I like the +1.3s/day accuracy even better. 😁 😁

I live in high humidity and hot country.. The cordura strap just stay in box while 95% of the time is with rubber strap. 5% is with full brown calf leather in some formal occasion.

In my view DSOTM is most striking ceramics Speedmaster.

Nice! Love the red stitching on the outside. Is that this one?

Seems like sand is one of the few things that could potentially scratch the ceramic. Have you guys used this watch at the beach w/o any issues? It would be rather hard to polish out any scratches 😀

Summer has arrived and I thought I could post some photos and add some feedback after two months on the dark side.

But laziness prevailed today, so perhaps checking out those original Speedmaster DSOTM videos can be good fun too! 😁

Damn, just noticed the new Planet Ocean Deep Black. Those things look awesome... Nice level of detail. I guess the world needed more ZrO2 😁

You shouldn't have. That mistake ended up making me get it. The thing just sticks in your mind even weeks after leaving the shop.

My DSOTM arrived yesterday, and rather than posting a whole new review, I went back and re-read Karalhoin's excellent post and can't agree more. From my perspective as a novice luxury watch buyer, I feel that there is a lot of craftsmanship that goes into this thing, and seeing its beauty in real life well surpasses what any photo or description can convey. It's definitely something I wear with pride.

Prior to this arriving, I thought about buying an aftermarket strap with the red stitching on the outside (as he mentioned above, it's only on the inside of the wrist strap), however now I think it's a well-designed approach. For me, one of the main reasons why I liked the DSOTM instead of the GSOTM is that it is truly a understated "sleeper" -- unless someone knows what it is, it can pass for an ordinary watch and is not flashy in any way (I think the black face draws less attention than the Gray Side's color)... and an external red stitching would end up calling additional attention.

Upon first wearing the watch, the strap was mildly stiff; enough so that I was reminded it was on my wrist. After 1 day it has conformed nicely and I barely notice it. The ceramic-titanium clasp is beautiful... taut, solid, clearly engages, and seems like it would hold up well. As Karalhoin mentions above, the titanium is on the inside and the outside is ceramic.

My only regret is not being able to wear it everyday due to my work. Now I'm looking for a reliable winder that will take care of this thing... and the Omega box itself is so beautiful that I wish someone would design a winder that would fit inside!

I know exactly what you mean. I've tried a GSOTM and it is indeed a bit less discrete. It's still elegant, but not as low profile as the DSOTM. This can be good or bad, depending on the wearer's preference.

I like how it really looks totally ordinary (and sporty) from a distance. You can only notice the fine details once you are closer. I'd still like the red stitching, but this way it is a bit more flexible. I've worn it with a suit and it fits in pretty well, especially without tie. Not the same as a dress watch but acceptable, except for the thickness, that is. Not very shirt-compatible.[/QUOTE]

It will get even better with time, once the leather softens a bit. I thought the strap material would also attract dust and dirt, but after two months it still looks as just out of the box. Nice material.

That makes it more special when you do. 😜

The box is a treat indeed. Like the one in other Omega models.
I bought a Temotus winder and am happy with it. Not too expensive and it looks quite nice, and the opposite of the DSOTM... from a distance it looks classy and pricey and once you look up close it looks like cheap plastic 😁

I've had mine for 2-years now and still looks as new. I intend getting a clasp to replace my buckle and was intending to add the leather strap from one of the other subsequent models, but have ditched that idea now, I feel the original strap is just perfect. I was interested in the comment above about changing the strap because of being in a hot and humid climate. I am too, I live in Thailand and think the original strap is perfect for the conditions, it's never caused me any problems.
