I am still amazed that they can do this. As a kid I watched the news of launches that would get 10' up and then just drop right back down. Every time they bring one back I have goose bumps over it.

Jack Fischer and Fyodor Yurchikhin lift off this morning. Should be docking with ISS around 0930

First the Russians cut a crew member to save money and now the Speedmasters are gone too. This is the first Soyuz launch I've seen without the Speedmaster prominently displayed on the left arm of the Soyuz suit that I can remember with the exception of Shane Kimbrough on MS-02.

At least they'll have had room to breath on the way up. I'm not claustrophobic, but man - when you see the pics of a fully laden Soyuz...

I think Froot Loops would agree.

Fuel Leak? 9 out of 10 times no problem.
What happens on the 10th time? Problem!

Here's a gem of a report on yesterday's Soyuz launch from Pravda ...er...I mean RT Television. In what appears to me to be some cheesey video fakery, we're supposed to believe that reporter Emily Siu is standing about 300 meters from the rocket as it lifts off. Silly video tricks aside, there are some interesting bits of information that come out in snippets from the pre-flight press conference: confirmation that a seat on a Soyuz is valued at $US 70 million, and that the empty seat on this flight was loaded with additional cargo (the seat will be used to carry Astronaut Peggy Whitson on her return flight to Earth). We can also see that Cosmonaut Yurchikhin is wearing an X-33 Speedmaster during the press conference.

One more tidbit: Emily Siu came to RT from that other bastion of free and objective journalism: Al Jazeera.

I feel I should amend my accusation of video fakery (see above ^^^) after looking at the image below. Ms. Siu (the second, distant person in the scene) is likely standing in the spot where she reported on the liftoff (I have seen a number of reports from this spot during other rocket launches). The yet-to-be launched Soyuz is seen in the distance, probably 1-1.5km away (still damn close by Cape Canaveral standards). Take note of the concrete fence posts in the background. In the video report the fence posts are visible directly behind Ms. Siu, and appear very close (as does the rocket). If the report was shot with a camera with a very long lens (with the camera fairly distant from Ms. Siu), then what we saw in the report could very well be a legitimate shot of Ms. Siu + rocket. The lens shake we see in the report is further evidence of a long-lens shot.

It's all too easy now. 😁

The Dragon on orbit is on its second trip... First time they've sent a re-used capsule up. time to start naming them I think. We've already got 'Of Course I Still Love You' and 'Just Read the Instructions', so to stay in the same vein I suggest 'Ultimate Ship the Second' or 'Well, I Was in the Neighbourhood' 😎

Also, Spacex will be launching the hush hush X37 space plane:

I work with a lot of Russians. I find their lack of b******t refreshing and comforting. If I get worried about something and they're worried too, "Problem!"

Culturally, the Russians are a very pragmatic people in general. There was a time when we in the U.S. were too, but now we seem more concerned with selfies and being politically correct.
