Some advice on a Omega Constellation

Hi All,

I was hoping that I could get some advice on a possible purchase of this Omega Constellation.
It was made in 1966's and they are asking $1350 USD.
Not sure if anything has been refurbished. The dial looks original to me.
Really interested in what people think and wether that price looks right?
Thank you in advance!

Looks fine, just has small dotting which is quite usual for watches from Japan (moisture)...

Welcome @David Anderson

The watch you posted is a quite nice late-ish 168.004 dome dial.
Everything looks correct - the original ‘hidden’ crown is a nice bonus as is the BOR bracelet.

The pics are too over exposed to get a really good look at the condition of the case but it looks ok.
Bubbling in the dial lacquer is very common on Constellation dials of this age ( globally).

The 168.010 pie pan that @hoipolloi posted does look very good indeed, especially the sharp case - except perhaps for the awful cyclops crystal but that’s easily rectified.
Again the original ‘not quite hidden’ crown is a nice bonus.

This watch however does have an incorrect bracelet for the 19mm lugs.

Thank you so much for your comments. I really appreciate your help.
Do you think that $1350 USD is a fair price? I have seen other Constellations for twice this.
Thanks.

A watch close to or in mint condition can raise the price significantly.

Think this priced well. The dial is the reason the price is not higher. And then I saw it has an Omega signed crystal. Nice watch IMO

Also, don’t confuse asking price with selling price. Especially on eBay, C24 etc.

What do you mean by "awful cyclop crystal" ??

$1,350 is a reasonable price for a 168.004 in good condition. My guess is that the spotting on the dial will be barely visible to the naked eye. The beads of rice bracelet is a nice bonus. If the watch has been recently serviced and the seller can provide documentation, even better. Make sure to measure the circumference of your wrist and inquire whether the bracelet will fit before you order. BOR bracelets are fairly easy to source, but extra links can be more difficult to find and expensive to purchase.

Thanks for that. You have a good point. I will ask.

@David Anderson, good advice from @gbesq about the BOR, especially if it is coming from Japan.

I'm going to be a bit of a contrarian regarding condition.
'Hidden crown' Connies still don't command dog leg or lyre lug prices, so it's not a bargain as it stands.
The case looks good but not stellar and the bubbling of the lacquer might look to be more of a problem if the pics weren't so brightly lit.
However, it is the marks on the dial that cause some concern.
There are marks at 3/4 mins, 54/55 mins and below the centre of the dial.

Yes, the BOR is a genuine bonus (lets be generous and say to the tune of $200)
If you are importing the watch you could be looking at another 25% import costs?
So you are looking at $1687 total
minus $200 for the BOR gives a 'head' cost for the watch of $1487
That's around $500 too strong for this watch, in this condition, in my book.
If the dial was pristine it would be a different story.

Although it's a completely different kettle of fish, the .010 pie-pan that @hoipolloi posted is a better looking watch for the money IMHO (minus the bracelet of course - but you could always sell that)

Peemacgee's analysis is spot on. I followed his sage advice when I was a novice collector and have a near mint 168.004 with box and papers in my collection to show for it.

Ok so update on this post.
I bought and have just received the watch. It looks very new, a little too new really.
It's not right for me as i think it's too small for my wrist so I'm intending to send it back.
I did notice something weird. I was adjusting the strap and found an accumulation of what looks like dirt.
It seems strange that such a pristinely presented watch would have this.
Does anyone know what this could be? Other than dirt!

It's not too small. It's today's watches that are too big.
