Universal Geneve Tri-Compax cal 481:

I am listing my solid gold tri-compax up for sale as I have purchased another model and it is nearly done being restored – time to make some room for it. I have had this tri-compax for about 5 years and had a complete overhaul done by RGM two years ago. Mr Murphy actually called me himself to talk about the watch. Below is a summary of the condition:

Dial:
Original unrestored dial is in nice condition with some even patina. The pictures are a pretty accurate reflection of the condition. No significant spotting, flaking (other than on the outside edges of the dial under the bezel). A simple, clean, nice original dial.

Hands:
The hands are the original dagger styled hands that I prefer – makes the watch look a lot like a vintage Patek. They are clean without flaking of the gold. Some light scratches but nothing detracting.

Movement:
The cal 481 Recently received a complete service by RGM (paperwork will be included with the watch). All functions work as they should

Case:
Solid 14K yellow gold case is in very good condition with very little scratches. Case back is not dented, lugs are sharp and hallmarks are clearly visible. The case was cleaned, but not heavily polished in the service so it is still nice and sharp. Case is roughly 36mm wide with 20mm lug width.

Strap:
Comes on a high-end flat brown alligator strap. One of the unique items about this watch is that it a 20mm lug width. This gives it a very unique look on the wrist that I prefer over the usual 19mm compax lug width.

Price: $3,875, Paypal accepted

Have to say, its great to see the first original condition UG Tri-Compax listing in the FS section, if I hadn't just spend my watch fund on a new Retina Macbook I'd have made you an offer already.

thanks for the comment - she is a nice one. I bought the round pusher gold one of ebay a few months back and about to take delivery of it. No room in the stable for two gold ones so off she goes. I hope to a good home. I think the price is reasonable given condition and service.
Thanks

Well, this is a good one! I particularly like the crisp moonphase disc, such a nice contrast to the cream dial.

Now, if somebody just wants to give me $3775 (I'll cover the other $100 myself)!

I have been asked for movement pictures. Here is a picture of the movement and inside case back. Both are from before service as is clearly visible given the dial screw in the picture. I am also including a picture of it with another gold tri-compax so you can see the size.

For size comparison – this is not a small tri-compax

NOTE! Movement and case back are from prior to service!

That pair looks good together - I think if you can afford to do so, I would keep both of these watches.

thanks. Unfortunately I told the wife I would sell one to fund the other...

I will consider partial trades though. Would like to get some decent cash out of it plus a good vintage chrono. Maybe a cal 861 speedy?

Have you tried the "good long term investment" approach?

The truth of the matter is that Tri C's have been appreciating at a fairly good clip lately...right in the face of a big gold sell-off. Matt Bain just auctioned off a round pusher for around 6g's.

here's something she could read: http://www.matthewbaininc.com/post/affordable-dato-compax-watches

I'm a pathetic Matt Bain groupie. IMO, he's the most savy collector in North America.

yup - but one can only use that so many times. ITs okay though, I have a collection of tri-compaxes so plenty of others to enjoy.

This has just been purchased... By me 🥰

Well done. Was that cal 320 part of the deal?

No, I decided I am not going to part with the 320, at least for a while.

You are not going to be sorry on either decision brother. That is a proper Tri-Compax, that is, and Hoi didn't even have to kill him to buy it from his widow!👍

Don't worry, you'll get over it by finding a different watch with the money. 😉

..... and primo watches sell fast here. Lots of horological black holes and white whale hunters here. 😁
