For three years I lived one DC3 hop from Washington and the Smithsonian. I was learning to fly at the airport that ran a regular DC3 commuter service to Washington. Did I take the DC3? Nope, there was always another going to be another day. So then I moved to Mass and eventually back to England. Never did get to visit the Smithsonian. How stupid can you get?

Before my father passed and my mother took ill they had retired to that general area and when I visited them it would only be another hour or two ride to visit DC. My father always refused to go as it was too close to all the politicians.

That is an unfortunate but all too common reaction. There are many wonderful aspects about DC, including the Smithsonian. I am always stirred whenever I see the Whitehouse and the Mall.

My father was career Army, with two years in Vietnam. He could not bring himself to visit the Vietnam Wall, despite our prodding. It was just too painful. That I understood, especially after visiting it myself.

Yesterday we were near the WWI memorial to hear taps played, which are played each day at 5pm. It was a privilege to be there at that moment.

I agree, my father was a combat vet I think the beefeater gin messed up his head later on in years
