I would be inclined to age it at late fifties early sixties 👍

I am not within reach of the book to give a model number but it is a 27CS movement, if you pop the back off and give the mvt number we can give you a date +/- a year or two, but Alpha is in the right ballpark.

Just popped the back off and here are some pictures of the movement , the movement is C147650. If that helps . I’ve included a £2.00 coin for size comparison ,as that’s how much *I paid for the watch .

* How much Mrs CPRwatch actually paid for the watch as I had no cash on me ::facepalm1:: . So basically the watch was free 👍

I think that makes it early 50s maybe 1951. Need to look up the reference. Very nice buy for £2

An excellent score! Someone acquainted with the serials will be able to pinpoint the year approximately (Smiths aren’t quite as easy to date as Omega by serial), but it will be early 50s. I think the De Luxe moniker came in around 1952 and your serial is lower than my Smiths Antarctic which is c.1954. @Revo may very well be able to tell you more - he’s a moderator on the Smiths sub forum over on MWR. These De Luxes are lovely watches: my 1960 A361 (which cost me nearly a hundred times more than yours) says hi:

I think the movement dates to 1951/2 and is an early 27CS, signalled by the lack of 27CS marked on the barrel bridge and the 15 (jewels) being milled out and replaced with 17 (jewels). So an early De Luxe and an early centre seconds.

My very close mvt serial number A453.

Thank you for your reply and the watch seems to be quite early then . I’ve given the case and strap a gentle clean and removed a lot of the grime on it . It hasn’t come up too badly ,

Looks really well on you. They are on the small side the horn lug case but I have a couple and wear them happily with a long sleeve shirt. Yes, it's definitely early in the production of the 27CS.

Nice find! It's a model A.351 in the 1953 & '54 catalogues. Serial number C147650 is c.1952 as per the table below:

1948 - 1
1949 - 30000
1950 - 60000
1951 - 90000
1952 - 130000
1953 - 170000
1954 - 215000
1955 - 260000
1956 - 305000
1957 - 350000
1958 - 395000
1959 - 440000

That said this is the (then) brand new 27CS movement (so called because 12 linges 17 jewels Centre Seconds) which used the same base ebauche as the earlier cal. 1215 (which had subseconds at 6 o'clock) so the movement s/n might pre-date final production. Late 1952 is generally reckoned to be the earliest we see the 27CS by the way, so that fits perfectly.

Case was made in-house, as was the entire movement (Smiths even made their own jewels and oils.) Dial was likely outsourced to Burford, strap might be by Montal.
