What is this word "afford" mean? Does it mean I can "afford" ramen watches 😀

Plan for retirement as early as you can, of course.

However; you should also do whatever pleases you and ignore any advice to the contrary.

You can't take anything with you . . . but why separate yourself from what you have while you may yet enjoy it?

I am not going to sell anything I enjoy while I am alive.

I think that one of the last things you want to do is to divest yourself of the things you enjoy . . . and then sit around and wait to die.

Unless . . . unless you are the type of person who will actually achieve greater peace of mind in divesting. I'm not that type - not yet anyway.

I didn't actually start buying vintage watches until I hit 65 or so, ten years ago . . . and I plan on picking up a couple more - not many - if or when the mood strikes. I may sell those that I no longer wear. There is no watch that I'd buy that I won't wear as often as I like. Nothing has been purchased to be kept in a safe.

As to what happens when I am gone? I've made provisions for the big things and I have information on what collectible items cost me and what I think they may be worth and how they may be sold on. Some items may become heirlooms perhaps, but if any get sold for 5 cents on the dollar . . . after I have provided information to help move them on, I won't care now, will I?

I have started to divest myself of things that no longer bring satisfaction. So for example, I am selling off some 1/32 scale live steam engines and cars which make up trains. I enjoyed them while I built them or acquired them, but now? Not so much.

Do whatever pleases you as you move from one stage of life to another. Just try not to leave too much of a mess behind. 😉

Cheers.

~ Joe
Ah the great wisdom from the Big Ranch where all the great Hanharts roam free out on the prairie! Yes, I don't plan to sell anything once I start retirement and from the looks of things maybe able to build a collection like a certain individual 😀 However, until that trust kicks in, I'm going to be eating a lot of ramen to buy what I can when the opportunity exists. By the way JK may sell me one of your former IJNs.

I have graduated to making homemade ramen 😀

However, my favorite Maruchan Ramen flavors were chicken & picante beef. Edited as I said the wrong ones before. Dad brain lol

That said… I can’t afford anything as of late ever since my daughter was born 🙃

Don't worry! Soon, the parts of your brain that urged you to enjoy things for yourself will atrophy, leaving only the parts of your brain that enjoys doing things for your daughter to rule your life. At least, I think that's how it works.

We hit some financial milestones and can now splurge on really fancy ramen:

An acquaintance is going thru a combination of retirement, and failing health, right now. A mutual acquaintance contacted me that the guy has watches he wants to sell, and that he feels he would benefit from some advice from someone who has experience as a collector (in this case, me.) This guy isn’t really a collector, but he has four pocket watches he wants to sell (all Hamiltons.) I haven’t seen the watches, but he has said he’ll let them go if someone meets his price. His price tells me they really aren’t being offered for sale. Seems he expects there is a huge market for the watches he has! He has no family to leave them to, so I expect the liquidators will deal with them for pennies.

I love David Chang! I’m definitely going to splurge on this. I found I can get a three pack & starter pack, which includes various seasonings of his. Time to soft boil and marinate some eggs 😋

May 1969, Hamburger Hill, the battle that Americans fought the North Vietnamese for a worthless hill. Is buying watches at the beginning of retirement the Ramen Road?

My brother-in-law on his way to Vietnam first sailed to the Philippines. He had a very similar custom stainless steel watch band made for him. It is paired with Seiko he purchased in Japan.

$6 a bowl!? I guess I need to add 5 years to my retirement projections.

This does look really good! Sort of on the upper end of the watch spectrum? Great suggestion!

So originally, way back when, I’d planned to retire this year. However getting married and having kids a bit later in life put paid to that - so I have another 5 years to go! Plan is still about the same though - mortgage paid off, pension pot to have a steady inflation proof pension, reduced living expense, and built up a nice little wine cellar to enjoy as it ages like me.

In terms of other assets, as I was once told - everything you own today, will one day be owned by someone else. So I will start winding down and selling off - and putting away on funds for the kids. Will ask them which watches they they want, and will probably keep my beloved 145.012, 5513 and a dress watch, and sell the rest, over the coming years. As someone said - who needs the hassle of insurance, servicing etc? I’m going to spend my retirement drinking good red wine, reading good books, and going hiking in the hills with my dog, and pestering my boys for grandchildren…
