Should I open speedy case back myself?

Update: I received the proper tools, one of which was a Bergeon rubber ball: That thing worked great and opened up the cases that the wrench wouldn't easily budge!

Although I do now have a movement holder, I'm curious how people use these to wrench open a case back without risking scratches to the face on the metal blocks. The holder seems designed to, well, hold a movement for servicing rather than act as a vice to safely grip a case. I know you're not supposed to crazy on the wrenching action, but it still seems like a plastic- or wood-block model might be less risky. Or I could see slipping some felt between the pegs to keep the watch face off the metal, perhaps?

I assume you're talking about a case holder, not a movement holder. The photo I posted (twice in this thread actually) shows one with plastic pegs (red-colored), and the case is held by the pegs, not the metal frame. Which one did you buy? If you bought the one I showed, the pegs are adjusted so that the case rests on the bottom parts of the plastic pegs, which flare out, so it doesn't come into contact with the frame.

Interestingly, you can see that at some time in the past, someone apparently did not use a holder when attempting to open (and close) this case. 馃槈

Yes, case holder (not movement holder)--sorry wrong terminology. The one I got is not large enough for a speedy, it appears. It fits my smaller watches as shown in your pics but my speed crystal hits the metal... guess I need a larger one. Thanks!.

You can just mount the watch higher and slip a scrap piece of thin upholstery leather under the crystal. The lugs don't need to rest on the flared part of the pins. I think leather is better than using a rag.

As you can see, it's an "Omeeeeeeega"!....馃榾 it has 6 locating points on the case back, needs a @Pahawi opener in skilled hands..... and is not to be 'fakked about' with...馃榿

The friction balls are great if the backs are not too tight. If you have the Pahawi opener, it is excellent and fits perfectly. If you have a rubberized (I see leather was mentioned. That is good, too.) mat you can place the watch face down on that, as it will grip the watch, press the opener in firmly, (also grip it firmly with your hand) and twist very carefully and deliberately. If you have one of the cheap 3 point tools, (or God forbid the two point tool) they must be handled very carefully to avoid scratching. Once you've done it, you'll see there is nothing to it. Just take care removing the dustcover. That operation is more likely to cause real (other than cosmetic) damage if you aren't careful. Since my watches are never exposed to water, I do not torque the backs on as tightly as they could be, which makes removing them with a rubber ball or any opener much easier in the future.

Ahhh I see Tik-Tok馃槙....... Well as long as you have 6 locating slots on the end of it, Pahawi's opener should still work OK.馃憤
