What's a CD?
It was a mini silver record-an artifact of the late 20th century. People said it was better than vinyl records but we know now that they were just delusional and chose ease of use and portability over sound quality and archivability . You can still find them in dollar stores with Christmas music on them for old people.
I went to buy a friend a music CD (Shostakovich - 24 Preludes and Fugues) but found there was no shop in Cambridge selling CDs of classical music. Cambridge is supposed to be a rather intellectual city (as is the other big-ish Cambridge on the Charles River) so that was rather surprising. My friend doesn't do streaming so that wrecked this present idea.
I'll have to wrap up an IOU somehow ....
Touché. Maybe not one of my finest ideas. Guess I’m just too used to burning my own when I need them. Haven’t bought a CD in over 15 years. I still have hundreds of blank CD/DVDs that I’ll never use. But it’s the thought that counts, right? 😵💫
….more than someone who just clicked on Amazon while sitting on the toilet...
I closed my Amazon account last year and not going back. I still shop online but only from reputable brands that have their own website and they all do. I also think that everybody should keep making the effort of shopping locally as much as possible to support brick and mortar store owners. It would suck to live in a world where you can only shop online but it feels like that's where we're heading. As for Christmas gifts, I ask people (or someone close to them) what they want beforehand. It makes my life easier and them happier.
Don't let the cynics get you down. Actually it would take more time and effort to do this, so as the receiver of such a gift, I would feel like you valued my friendship more than someone who just clicked on Amazon while sitting on the toilet...
+1 to brick and mortar. We had a fabulous family owned video store here that stocked rare and OOp films from all over the world as well as popular stuff. They outlived blockbuster and Hollywood video etc well into the mid teens and finally has to close. On the local neighborhood chat board, people started bemoaning their closing and I finally asked “when was the last time you went in there?” Most everyone said it had been years as Netflix was easier, 😒
I miss video stores so bad.
This place was special- they carried all forms of film media including beta and reel film if that was the last media a film had been released on - and they maintained and rented the equipment to play it (yes, you could rent projectors and screens from them). The couple that owned it were avid film buffs and kept it going in their final years off their savings, long time staff that had to find employment elsewhere would volunteer in their spare time as they loved the owners but couldn’t pay them anymore. It’s was a tragic loss
Sounds like they were so enamored with their 'project' that they used their savings to keep it going, a negative cash flow business. Their choice, of course, but not wise for their financial health. It was a loss for the locals who were benefiting from a service that was economically unsound and was going to falter eventually. The owners might have been great people with some sort of vision, but it was a poor business model. Video stores no longer exist because they can't make money, we can pine for the good old days but good vibes don't pay the bills.
In the mall, fye will burn songs you choose or an entire album from their vast collection to a CD and apply a custom label or the original album art and print fitted liner notes in about 15 minutes.
