Sometimes they do. VintageOmegaUSA, SinisterRaccoon, and many others leave them in place. Some members, for example Heman, even acknowledge that they're quite fond of their assigned avatars.

Tried that, nothing happens when I click on 'Browse'
Top right of the page next to search function click on the down arrow and you will see "Avatar"
Upload new custom avatar and from there all self explanatory 👍
