Servicing Vintage Speedmasters - need advice

Hi Everyone, I first posted information about the two watches pictured on August 19 and received wonderful input and help from everyone. Again, thank you all. Based on the photos, the suggested ref #'s were a late reference 2998 or a 105.002, and the second one is a 145.012 or 145.022-68. There are dates on the bracelets, which are 2/61 and 3/68, respectively, if that helps.

I do not want to sell these watches as they are from a dear friend of my mom's who recently passed away. I am looking to have the reference #'s confirmed and obtain serial #'s. In addition, I'd like to have watches serviced, cleaned up and inspected. Also would like to get new hesalite and a top pusher installed on the Speedmaster Professional (if possible). I do not want them polished as I am fine with the existing condition. And, most all of you have said do not send them to the Omega Boutique or get them polished -- as that will impact their value. I live near Denver and am looking for suggestions on expert vintage watchmakers who are reliable and able to do the work here in the US. I do not mind sending via FedEx, if necessary.

Thank you!

Thank you!

I’m sure that you will get a number of good recommendations from other OF members. Tanner Morehouse at TM Watch Company in Fargo, ND is very good and will accept watches for service via FedEx. He is very detail oriented and you can speak with him directly about what you want done and, more importantly, what you DON’T want done. Good luck.

Find an independent watchmaker with an Omega parts account.

Looked around Denver … seem to be some shops … I’d start there before sending such valuable pieces out of town. No one on this forum in Denver?

I'd settle on the best repair person to do the work over proximity to where the owner lives. Denver to Fargo round trip is about $250, would be worth a day or two to fly the watches up and discuss with Tanner Morehouse exactly what needs to be done. Collecting valuable watches costs a little money to maintain them. Don't cheap out by using a repair shop selected on being close to where you live.

I agree with that..I also have an independent watchmaker in my town which can order most of the Omega parts..the parts can be expensive and the time for waiting it's long but the work of the watchmaker it's cheaper compared with the one from Omega..

Fair point. Hadn’t thought of buying a ticket, however Denver is a big city.

Agreed, sending it to anyone who doesn't have a parts account and OMEGA authorisation is going to mean lots of corners get cut.
