How do you spot a service dial and hands on the GMT Master from the 1970s / early 80s ? Are there any clues to look out for ? Would be grateful to have your method and thoughts .

Depends when the service dial was manufactured.

There is also variation in the factory dials across the 15 or so years you’re talking about. Best to do
Some research and familiarise yourself with the various original dials from this era.

You can study the correct dials for various serial number ranges using standard internet resources that are easily found using google.

Thank you , Vibe , it is an interesting site , resourceful. But it is really hard to distinguish the service dials, Dan is right - one has to just train one's eye or pay 3K more and buy from someone , whose beady eye/ expertise and IQ one can trust .

Even if you’re going to pay a trusted dealer, it doesn’t hurt to train your eye and know the details anyway. You’ve started countless threads on vintage Omega and Rolex so you clearly have an interest.
Just narrow down your field to one or two models and time periods and start researching. It will come.

Exactly this! You need to do your due diligence or you may end up with a basket case. Thankfully there are a lot of resources out there.
