Service advice

My vintage Moonwatch I think is well overdue a service. It’s a Sixties example, but I can’t remember the exact date, pre Moon but not pre space I think from memory. I will probably send it to Omega for a service, but my problem is I’m not sure what I should let them replace. The bezel is showing significant wear, particularly around 12 as you can see from the photograph hopefully. Do I allow them to replace it, or is that a bad idea?

Omega will return the parts they replace. If this was a Rolex I would suggest to lose the bezel before dropping it off for a service ;-)

I’m assuming this has a plain hippocampus caseback? As it appears to be a -69 with the rare 220 error bezel.

That bezel was only used for a month or so as it has a 220 near 4 o’clock when it should have 200.

So, in terms of originality and collectability you absolutely shouldn’t have it replaced. It may also have the original 24 tooth crown.
However, if you really want to spruce it up, Omega will at least return the original bezel if you replace it so you can always reinstall it int the future. Personally I’d have it serviced and cleaned by a good independent and keep the bezel etx

It looks as though it’s a -69 with 220 error bezel.

I don’t advise sending this to Omega as they will replace original parts like the dial, hands, bezel, crown, pushers, and replace them with modern parts.

It’s better to find an independent watchmaker with an Omega parts account that can service this while preserving originality. While the bezel does show wear, it’s still an “error” bezel, which is rare, unique, and collectible.

Heh @Davidt beat me to it 👍

It's always a good idea to give these timepieces the care they deserve. When you send it to Omega for a service, they'll be able to assess the condition of your watch and recommend any necessary replacements or repairs.

Regarding the bezel showing significant wear, Omega will definitely take a look at that during the service. They'll be able to determine if it can be restored or if it needs to be replaced. They have the expertise to bring your watch back to its former glory.

I understand that it can be tough deciding what parts to replace, but trust Omega's professionals to make the best recommendations based on the condition of your watch. They'll ensure it gets the proper care and attention it needs. Enjoy the process of getting your vintage Moonwatch serviced.

That’s nonsense. Omega won’t restore that bezel, they’ll simply replace it with the current professional bezel.

Omega will charge a very high fee, the watch will be gone for months, and you will have virtually no input regarding what is replaced. This often results in a bright shiny watch which is stripped of its vintage attractions and value. Find an independent watchmaker with Omega parts account- tell us where you are and members can point you in that direction.
Nice watch and good luck!

Yes, Omega is a poor choice where originality is of concern...

+1 for having your vintage Speedmaster serviced by an independent watchmaker OP. Members here can provide some recommendations based on your location if you were to share it.

I'm assuming this is AI nonsense?

definitely seeing more of it around here, it’s not especially hard to spot at the moment, it’s kind of like a concierge crossed with a dictionary crossed with a customer service phone line. Not sure if it will get better.

what’s the angle on using AI here, is it just getting past the 200 post count to be able to sell or what?

Should be banned....

As much as I would hate to jump to conclusions and unfairly penalize another member, looking at that account's other posts and, yeah, that's not an actual person writing those posts.

I've been wondering that myself. But I've been seeing a lot of this even on sites for which there is no tangible benefit to posting. I don't know if it's at all nefarious or if folks are just getting their chuckles playing with the LLM toys.

Yes, I did a quick scurry round it's other posts and concluded it's not human. I'm seeing quite a lot of similar accounts on X now so I'm guessing someone has come up with an API, as it's a bit sad to be sitting there hitting copy and paste.

When I said ban, I didn't necessary mean the user, the community should decide whether this should be permitted in its policies / terms & conditions. I think in the long term it will undermine trust in the platform, as well as annoy the heck out of some of us!

@Santa … Where do you live? This info will allow us to direct you to an independent watchmaker with an Omega parts account. In this way you will get a functioning watch back that looks like the one you dropped off and retains its value.

The North Pole, obviously.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I agree with the advise to send it to an independent watchmaker. I would add that when Omega returns parts that they replaced, they are tossed together in a plastic bag without care if they be damaged in return shipping.
