Sending a vintage '66 to Omega for an "original" crown

Hey again guys....just love my 2 knew vintage speedies...
The 105.012-66 I bought off the forum here (it's awesome BTW) didn't come with the original 24 Flat foot crown (I knew that so wasn't disappointed at all) ...
Anyway I have sourced an original crown and I took the watch down to a registered Omega watch service guy...not an OMEGA boutique, but a watchmaker who sends off and gets original Omega parts and will work on the watch.
He said he wouldn't use my crown and the only way he would guarantee against water ingress etc *after the service" is if he sends off for (and uses) "genuine" omega replacement parts..
That he would tell Omega the serial number and they would send him the correct "crown"...
So what crown would I get back from Omega? a "new" correct for the watch A1 24 Flat foot? Or would Omega send a different style crown (for a knewer speedmaster) like a CatB 32 tooth crown?
Also what would happen if I sent this watch back to Omega in Switzerland ? What crown would they put on it?
The guy couldn't actually confirm with me I'd get a 24 flat foot!
Any ideas what to do?
Thanks

The 24 flat foot is discontinued so Omega won't send it to the watchmaker

Water resistance is surley not the topic here, you won't go swimming with your watch, do you? 😉

Where are you located?

Heck no I wouldn't dream go swimming with it ...LOL are you kidding me!!!

I was more concerned about splash from hand washing etc and alcohol hand gel actually - with having to wash my hands so much and use hand gel with COVID and everything..

Another option is to send the crown to a watchmaker who knows how to replace the seals.

Well sure... my guy knows what to do, it's just he wouldn't "guarantee" water tightness unless he was using "certified" omega parts
In other words it's a legal issue not a practical one..
I'm sure he could do the job, it's just the paperwork and signing off stuff
cheers

Go to a different independent watchmaker and say that you are OK without the watch being waterproof.

Yes you can't really guarantee anything vintage.. so I would instruct him to restore your crown to the best of his ability and you accept any risk that entails.

Have a look if Phil Gore in Ferntreegully is still working..... He will fix it for you without legal issues.

Btw: are we talking about so called " First World" problems here? Speedmaster watertight? Replace All seals incl. Pusher and maybe check the seat of the crystal as well.... Every bump could upset that " water tightness " again. She made it to the Moon; not much water there..... Was not designed for water tightness. But still mastered that as well. I forgot to take off mine a few times when cleaning the Pool.... Nothing bad happened. If taken care of, Speedmasters can take a lot.

I don't understand why your watchmaker has more confidence in a newer Omega crown replacement than a replaced gasket. Surely a pressure test performed after the service will show how watertight it is - after that point anything can happen, just as with any pressure test.

If a warranty is what you are after, perhaps vintage watches are a bit too risky for your tastes?

Hang on guy's don't take pot shots at me... I wasn't the problem here...I was more than happy to have it done without warranty - it's the watch repairer that wouldn't do it (without actually parts from Omega).. Cheers

Hold on a sec...I don't think getting alcohol hand gel into a vintage speedmaster is a "first world" problem.. it's a legit concern! ...we all want to wear our watches during covid...

Okay, so he doesn't want to do the job because he cannot do it with a warranty, got it.

OP should see a different watchmaker and get the correct crown

Yep that's right - I have the "correct" crown...the issue is getting someone to actually fit it (and sign off that it's water resistant without thinking they have to take all that responsibility)...One thing is 100% 4 sure I won't be sending it to Omega ...(even though it's an all time classic speedmaster!) ......

The crown is no longer in production.
I understand, but in the original post OP says “Anyway I have sourced an original crown ”. The problem is his watchmaker won’t put it on. So he should see someone else who will

No watchmaker in their right mind is going to "sign off on it being water resistant" if it's not actually water resistant. So if you are telling the watch maker he has to "sign off" on it being water resistant with a vintage crown, it's not the watchmaker who is the issue here.

I service watches all the time and they have no water resistance after, because people want to keep everything as "original" as possible. But I tell them straight up that the watch has to be kept 100% dry.
