Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like an old fart when they read this thread? I really must be missing the point.

Fellas these are just jeans you are talking about. They all look the same (almost). Some fit, some don't fit so well. There is blue and a different sort of blue. Some look like they have run over on the highway, some like you left them in the back shed for a few years.

Now watches, cars or hifi component, that I can understand.😉😉

Hahaha. 😁

Basically they are very similar to watches, meaning the devil is in the details. I will try to break it down for you. Let's start from the very top:
- Belt loops - raised or flat
- Fly - one piece or two piece; button fly or zip fly
- Selvedge coin pocket - peek-a-boo or exposed (vertically or horizontally)
- Coin, front and back pockets - bartacks, hidden or exposed rivets
- Back pockets - with or without lining
- Inseam stitching - Overlock stitch or flat-felled seam
- Leg opening - Chain stitched or flat-felled seam

There are other details that I leave out. Once they start to fade is similar to when watches start to develop patina. 😁😁

But they are just jeans, right? Yet another of the universe's mysteries...

Yes, they're just jeans. Just like watches are just watches and cars are just cars. 😉

A little more than fade happening on my Naked & Famous 12oz selvage. this was after a little over 1 year of continuous wear. And by continuous, i mean that it was literally the only pair of pants I wore for the last year. Time to get them off to for some repair and back into use.

Great fades. Patch it up and it will be good to go! 👍

Here's an update of my recent visit to Kojima.

I arrived early in Kojima feeling extremely happy. Most of the stores were not even open yet. Stopped by a local coffee shop to have my morning fix. I started walking around at 11 am only to find out there were only a couple of stores open. Most of them were already on holiday. Nevertheless, I was lucky enough to be able to visit Kamikaze Attack, Japan Blue Jeans and Momotaro, amongst other stores.

I browsed around the stores and nothing caught my eye, most of the stuff is available online so I couldn't be bothered to try them on because in Japan you must take your shoes off before walking into the fitting room. And I was wearing a pair of boots! But I found something when I walked into Momotaro. A pair of slim tapered denim with blue / white going-to-battle stripes. The blue stripe is strictly limited to the Momotaro store in Kojima. I knew I had to buy them as soon as I tried them on. 😁 And that leather patch is something else!

I only spent a couple of hours in Jeans Street because most of the stores were closed. But it was quite an amazing experience to actually be there and see where these jeans were made.

A couple of days later I had an unplanned visit to Levi's while I was in Shinjuku and found a pair of washed 18oz Japanese fabric by Levi's Made and Crafted. Yes, I purchased them. 😁😁

That's what my wife says about the watches. ;-)

Been lurking on this thread for a while and haven’t had the opportunity to post!

Here are my LVC 501XX 1955s, about 12 years old.

The overall fade is quite vintage and generally uninspiring as I washed them at leisure back then:

But there are some nice train tracks and the roping in the chain stitched hem is fantastic:

I’m also working on a pair of Levi’s Original Fit 501 shrink to fit, colour Long Day. They’re 15 months in and yet to have the first wash (not including the original soak to shrink them).

I think the lightweight denim will produce a decent fade when I finally wash them. Not bad for £50!

@Mathlar - I'm gonna start washing one pair to have one with vintage fade. Yours is looking pretty awesome!

@Mathlar - I find that lightweight denim tends to fade slower. I've been wearing my Stevenson Overall (13.5 oz) for a year as well and the fades are coming in very slowly.

@Mathlar - I've heard of and seen Hiut a couple of times. How do they fit?

Mid rise but a little lower than 501s. Not a bad fit. The quality is excellent and there’s an interesting green tinge to the indigo.

I think it’s more that they broke in far more quickly and the denim forms sharper creases, particularly in the honeycomb. Here’s the honeycomb on both pairs:

I’ve been ‘collecting’ selvedge denim for about 8-9 years. (Now that I think about it, it hurts to think of the watches I could have for the same investment.) The NSFs are my all time favorites. Amazing jeans. I even found a light weight version on clear out at Barneys in NY a few years ago - perfect for summer! Ever the proud Canadian, Naked and Famous comprise the bulk of my collection. Using Japanese denim to create amazingly well fitting not to mention unique (ok, occasionally wacky) styles, I love them and how well they wear.

The ‘Frankenstein’ denim pair (seriously, that’s their name), complete with upside down patch, while not selvedge per se, are made from super heavy Japanese slub denim. I have both a grey and blue pair and they are still being broken in - after 3-4 years of winter use!

Love this thread 😜. Great call!

@Mathlar - I guess different fabrics simply fade differently. 😉

I'll check out Hiut's website and will learn more about the brand. Thanks!

@mydeafcat - First time hearing about NSF. I'll find out more about the brand.

Yes, N&F offers some incredible denim at amazing price points, eventhough some are quite weird. 😁 Glad you love this thread. Thank you for joining! 👍

Post pictures of your N&F once completely broken in.

Preordered these in November and finally got them yesterday. Glad it worked out for me; the last pair I tried were way too slim and it'd suck to wait months for these and not have them fit. They seem well constructed and are reasonably priced. Think I'll be sticking with Brave Star for a bit; their Japanese denim (the pair I returned) had a nice texture to them and I'm thinking about getting a pair of those to rotate with these.

Gonna try something different with these and wear them for a while before soaking. I'll just have to be a little generous when hemming them, although I've heard the inseam doesn't shrink as much as the waist.
