Selling on eBay - Something smells - Am I just paranoid?

I’d guess that the OP was selling a gen 4 iPad Pro if selling for 400. A quick eBay search results in lots of them for around that price.

That does make more sense. If it's the case, I'll revise my opinion of the OP from paranoid and predatory to simply paranoid.

Advice from expert seller contact through eBay was:
'You are really overthinking this, taking pictures or video proves nothing, anyone can take a picture or video and switch the parcel after, it isn't evidence that will be accepted'.
Latest I can ships Tuesday.
I did express no returns.

Maybe I am just paranoid.

Hi, perhaps I was just lucky or it had nothing to do with anything...

I had a case where I returned a watch part, and won the case (with my credit card company), I believe due to my video.

My video was a bit elaborate and the seller seemed a bit off.

I had my wife video me putting in the item, double boxed, tape it, seal it with masking tape (the stuff that does not come off easily) on all seams, did a marker signature on all seams to detect tampering. Then when dropping it off at Post Office, they let me video tape the box showing all the same signed seams, hand it to them show, them weighing it.

Does “rented apartment” mean something different than I think? Rented apartments have been my residence for nearly the entirety of my adult life, and I’ve bought plenty of stuff from eBay.
In this case it is really a hotel where you rent an apartment. So short term stays generally. Not a fixed address.

Yep. Reached out the very same and asked them to confirm the shipping address and contact number as it would be signed and tracked.
They responded with 'the address is as per eBay instructions'.
I did ask for a contact number for tracking purposes for the address, and a mobile number was provided. (which I will look to contact tomorrow.

That sounds promising. You could also Google the phone number. It sounds like you will be ok. I don’t see anything wrong in carrying out due diligence and being cautious given the amount of fraud around even before the current economic crisis. Also in terms of proof of packing keep in mind you can also report things to the Police not just eBay. To date I have only had two items stolen off me. A dreadful T-shirt taken from a beach in Corfu and a mobile phone. The phone was years ago in the eBay Wild West days. The buyer paid by PayPal but I did not qualify for seller protection (my first error). It turned out the flat was unoccupied (my second error) The delivery guy returned the parcel to the post office and put a card in the flats shared access door. They somehow collected it with a fake ID. PayPal reversed the payment sometime after and chased me down for the money as they had used a stolen bank card. It was a long time ago so I don’t recall all of it. The police looked into it but it was not a priority and they did not get much help from eBay/PayPal at the time. I have used eBay a fair bit (buying and selling since 2002) and 99.99% of people from all countries have been fine - but when you take that for granted you become a potential mark IMHO.

Wait, what has the stolen credit card got to do with you?

If you are that worried, my advice would just be to send the buyer a cancellation request with apology and say you just noticed your item was damaged.
The buyer will have to accept, and you wont be charged anything.

Theres no point living your life with the stress of potentially being scammed hanging over you,

As I recall (and it was a while ago) monies could be reversed / banks could call money back within a certain timeframe if it was a fraud transaction. Because I did not qualify for seller protection (I think the address was not verified or some such issue) Paypal issued a chargeback request. I refused and they then froze my account and in the end, looking back got a debt agency involved which can bring a heap of pain. I had no choice but to pay the money back to Paypal. I did raise a complaint with the FSA but that drew a blank. This was in 2006 / the rules may have changed since then. The basis of my complaint to the FSA was I had it in writing from the Police that Paypal had not supported their investigation. Also I had it in writing that Paypal told me not to contact the police.

Paranoid. If it’s tracked and signed you should be fine.

if you have concerns reach out to eBay.

Couriers have a habit of dropping things off at the front door, even if the sender requests a signature.

Is the seller covered for this? I, too, have always been reticent about selling anything on ebay.

Yup, and this is exceedingly frustrating. All of my recent watch purchases, some over $1k, all left at my door despite required signature. Numerous camera bodies/lenses that I had serviced, totaling over $3k were left on my front porch despite signature being paid for. In 2021 I sold a Rolex Sub for 7.5k and it was left on the receivers front porch with not even a knock on the door, despite me paying for signature.

Same here. It was understandably born of Covid but it continues to this day. If it’s still policy due to Covid I don’t know why they offer it. It’s not that much of an irritation to me as my area doesn’t get many porch pirates that I hear of but if they are asking you if you want signature and paying extra for it strikes me as a bit off.

Fortunately for me, I live in a very quiet neighborhood, my front porch area is protected/not viewable from the street, and I work from home; I’m not really concerned about theft. It was very frustrating in the case of the Rolex because the package was left on a table on the front porch, in plain sight of street traffic at the receivers house, for a good amount of time. The cameras were delivered to my neighbors house and left at their front door despite them not being home. I only found that out when I refreshed the tracking and it said delivered. Outside of that, it’s frustrating to pay extra for a service that, in most cases, is not provided. In all of my deliveries, I have only had two drivers follow through with the signature. One DHL driver put the package at my door, rang the bell, stood back 5ft and when I opened the door, he signed for me. I appreciated that. The other instance was a USPS driver who left a note for me when I wasn’t home.

We know some of the delivery people and they know the neighbourhood, so they do make decisions on local knowledge. For other deliveries they do have to take a photo (mostly) now. If the photo shows it on a doorstep I suspect insurance will kick in as a valid claim.
Mostly people play fair which gives me hope / we don’t want everyone working to rule or their is no community. Of course already with the level of monitoring, tracking and CCTV we are all walking it into 1984 …maybe ….but at least we get lots of cheap stuff :0)

My FOIS came 2 days late and I was out of town. Sent from the eBay “authentication” process. No signature, just left on the door step. Imagine my panic trying to get a friend over to grab it.
