Agreed - if you're gonna do it, get the real McCoy.
Good lookin' watch, eh? That's the 323.30.40.40.04.00

The 3211.31 or 3210.51 are my favorite of those, because they used the Valjoux 7750 instead of that DD / 2892 combination:

I musta had too much beer tonight...this is not real...or is it?

Taxman I had a reduced. Thought like you it would satisfy me, but it didn’t. However I do have a Mk40 and I have for many years. That watch still gets a lot of wear from me.

I think the silver dial Mk40s are great. Not really a speedmaster (in the truest sense of the word) but a very nice watch.

I agree with the others you should start saving and keep at it until you can buy a nice used professional. In the meantime study the speedmaster and figure out which kind you really want in the end. There are a lot of variations over the years and many places for your heart and wallet to land.

I sold all my affordables to buy my first Omega. For me it was a great choice and if I had the chance I would do it again in a heart beat.

The Omega you have is good enough... what ever that means.

Heck the right 300 dollar Seiko from the late 60’s will get more attention then a new Patek here.

What’s important is you have what you want.

Or look at it this way... if a quartz omega is good enough for a Prince of England it’s good enough for anyone 😉

Sorry can't by class 😉

The MK40 and Speedy Dates in the right colors are not bad. That being said as an owner of a Pro and a Date I never wear my date.

I‘ve been down this road and currently own the Day-Date Automatic (or MK40 if you prefer) as well as the Pro.

You get a lot of bang for the buck with the Day-Date and that was my original reason for wanting it. Mine was actually a gift from both sides of my family for my 40th, as well as being my first Omega so special in that sense. It was more or less my only watch for about 10 years and thus you could say I was pretty happy with it. I think it makes a good daily companion. But honestly it’s not even remotely like the Speedmaster Professional; like night and day different.

Although my Pro has a non-scratch resistant Hesalite crystal compared to the scratch-free Sapphire on the MK40 and obviously fewer complications it’s still somehow more interesting. This might sound a bit daft but there is something strangely satisfying about the manual winding experience on the Pro that you don’t get so much with the Automatic. That’s probably true for any number of manual wind watches, but anyway, it’s a difference that’s nice.

If I was going down this road again would I do the same? Probably not. I think I would have gone for the Longines L2.673.4.78.3 first which has a beautiful dial and adds the Moonphase complication.

That would have better satisfied the desire for maximum functionality in a single piece at an affordable price, then add the Pro at a later date when funds and knowledge provide more choice.

Try to avoid being blinded by all the hype; the Speedmaster is a nice watch in most of its forms, but there are plenty of others that are just as fascinating out there.

Take your time, choose wisely, oh and have fun!

great advice, I actually tried on a few other models...I feel the smaller date version fits pretty well. What is the panda version below? I have seen it with the silver bezel 3511.50 I believe is the ref #,.
