I’ve been admiring other members Sportsmatics over the years, thanks to WRUW, and after months of havering, succumbed to temptation and bought this (and it’s in the post)

I appreciate that purists will say it’s over polished but it’s pretty much what I wanted and has the advantage of no date feature.

Both before and after I took the plunge, I tried to research the model with limited success. It has a cal 2451 movement and case J13058 but apart from the fact that these appear only to have been made between 1963/1964 can find very little about the watch or the movement.

Obviously, if anyone here can tell me about the watch, I’d be interested to know.

I’ve found a short history from 'Watch & Vintage', and attach a link to the article, and hope they don’t mind my using it.

I've also found photos of a similar movement and caseback to the watch i'm expecting, showing a 2451 movement and a J13058 caseback.

I had the watch in my eBay watchlist for some little time but, after taking the plunge I suffered pre-receipt 'buyers' remorse' and have fretted about both the condition of the watch and the price I paid, particularly after comparing it with other ‘Sold' models but now, given that the seller said it was serviced and, also given that it seems to be a very early model Sportsmatic, providing it is up to the quality of photos and the seller’s description, I think I might have done alright.

The UK seller appears to accept ‘returns' and, given that I’m in the UK, there’s no duty/import tax to worry about.

If anyone can add anything, I’ll still be interested to know.

Nice early watch I think it’s got signs of wear but doesn’t really look too polished to me.
Dial and movement look good.
With the automatic movement they were designed to set and wear without need to use crown much, the recessed crown at 4:00 is part of that concept. the Sportsmatic evolved a few years later into Seiko 5 Sports line and the dressier version was Seikomatic.
I think yours is a nice early piece that marks a place in Seiko history. Congrats. It’s pretty hard to significantly overpay for a Seiko and one in really good condition like this is worth it imo.
Show more pics when it arrives!

Thanks for this, that’s reassuring and appreciated.

One of the reasons that I was keen to get a no date version is that manipulating the recessed crown can be fiddly when changing the day/date and IMO day/dates can appear to ‘clutter' what I regard as a classic dial. I am also keen on the dauphin (?) style hands.

Seiko made so many great models in the 60s, it's hard to know where to stop. 😀

Uh oh, I never realised.
I thought I could just get one.
I didn’t realise where it might lead, might end …
It was only one watch…. 😲

And I’m assuming that is just your week dater collection so, if you don’t mind my asking, how many 60s Seikos do you have?

Well, it’s arrived and the case, hands and dial are better than I hoped. Just testing the accuracy.
