Long Island watches who brings in a lot of them warned it 6 months ago. My local Seiko shop told me the same thing without prompting when they saw my 009 last month...

So I don’t know. Then again Seiko officially said it about the Alpinist and they appear to still be available...

Yeah, I checked my emails and Long Island Watch sold me my NIB unworn SKX007 in May 2016 after confirming to me that they were being discontinued. My local Seiko AD hasn't had the SKX models in his shop for a couple of years, now that I think about it. Since then he's sold me my PADI turtle and Blue Lagoon, and Astron, but I bought my SKX173 from him many years ago.

My skx007 has survived trekking over mountains, surfing, horseriding and a lot of other painful activities.

The insert came unstuck recently (thanks PO!) but it has performed faultlessly otherwise.

Couldn't resist a photo opportunity of mine , the SKX is without doubt one of the best VFM watches ever .

Congrats! The SKX007 is a classic for all the reasons mentioned above. Plus, if you ever tire of the 'bog standard' SKX007, you can always mod it, many modded versions exist (just google them) and it's really fun.
believe it or not this started as an skx007

this too...
.
and one more....

My good lady just commented today that although my Seiko is one of the least expensive I own she likes it more than most of the others, praise indeed.

Haha same here. "If that one was only 200 quid, why on earth do you spend so much on the others when it looks as nice, if not nicer?!"

You don't have to convince me on the virtues of the SKX007-09. I'm thrilled with mine which I purchased specifically for my truck driving-flatbed loading duties. An amazingly tough and accurate timekeeper...all for 200 bucks!

It also looks good.. its mechanical..and finally, makes me smile.

Cheers,

I know the rumor of the SKX demise goes back further than when the PADI Turtle came out, and maybe even as far back as the reintroduction of the modern turtles like SRP773 and such.

I sold my SKX's. Both JDM models. I know there is great love for them but the lack of hand-winding and hacking bothered me. I upgraded to a SRP773 JDM and have enjoyed it. However, in my new hobby of watches and watch collecting, I decided to upgrade to the SBDC051 (62 MAS reinterpretation) also a JDM. I plan to flip the 773 on eBay fairly soon.

The 773 IMO is a much better watch. As is the SBDC051 to the Turtle.

I know what you mean. I'd like the option of a slightly higher end SKX - hacking, auto + hand winding, slightly sharper case etc.

I can't get on with the turtles, the shape just doesn't do it for me. The 051/53/71 are others I've been looking at. I'm sure a few of members would like to see a review/your thoughts on yours.

My 007K with a double AR crystal, skx171 dial, ceremic bezel insert, and coin edge bezel.

I really beat this watch up. At one point I may or may not have stood on it trying to get the bezel back on.

Someone commissioned this - commemorating my alma mater!

a close up of that dial, sans hands and indices:

My understanding only 50 copies were commissioned. I managed to snag 1 for myself in the secondary market. A keeper (for me) if there was any, plus scratches the itch for a watch with a maroon dial!

Well chosen mods.

So, do we know for sure if they are really being discontinued?

Should I retuen my SKX173 back to stock?

I live quite happily with my modded SKX007, and my Turtle (SRPA21, the PADI one). Both have their charms, the blue dial of the PADI turtle is just wonderful, and both get wrist time in equal measure.

There's plenty of heresay and rumours that they're being discontinued but the serial dates mine to April of this year, so they were certainly in production until recently.

From everything I've read recently, I think the most likely scenario is that production will continue in occasional batches.

At the price point (ok not the same price but still in the entry level ball park) the new Turtles seem to be a replacement - possibly as Seiko moves further upmarket in pushing the ProSpex range? The fact that the skx is no longer on the website and I don't recall seeing it in shop windows for ages suggests they certainly aren't actively pushing it anymore.

I have bought the super oyster from Strapcode to fit on my SKX. It came without spring bars. I have a hard time fitting it with the original Seiko spring bars that came with the watch. Should I try harder or buy other spring bars. If so, what type? Thanks.

Have loved mine for a couple years now, seen through some thick situations for sure and keeps on going!

Modded with the Seiko 4r36 movement (parts supplied but I didn't do the work) to get the hand winding for times when it's not being used daily.

Ive been hankering for a modern diver and/or GMT for a while but cannot fit the life of me decide which model to go for.

While I mull it over for another couple of weeks/months/years I decided to go with a Seiko to tide me over and break my new watch duck as despite owning a number of vintage watches I've never paid owned a brand new watch (save for the obligatory Casios when I was little).

I considered some of the PADI branded divers and the SPB051/53/71/77 as well as turtles. After a while I thought "sod it, I'll get the obvious one, you know, the one Rolex copied when they made the Red Sub".

So I ended up with a bog standard SKX007j. I decided to go with the J version (even though I understand it's probably no better than the K) from Creation Watches in Singapore. I've got to say they were great, it arrived in the UK in 4 days, well packed at a good price. I'm just waiting for a new bracelet to arrive now.

In terms of the watch it's exactly what I expected. Tough, solid and built like a tank. The bezel has a nice action and the dial is wonderfully laid out.

Is it comparable to high end Swiss divers? Of course not. The screw down crown doesn't have quite the same smooth action, the printing isn't as crisp, the chapter ring is very, very slightly misaligned and the case, although nicely finished, doesn't have the defined edges and facets you would see in some watches.

The point is, none of this matters. The cost is 2-4% of a Rolex diver and it's just as capable of fulfilling the same duties. For me certain 'luxury' dive watches have drifted too far from their roots and intended purpose. While most of the Subs/Seamasters etc are focussed on bling and status and are put to work in offices and bars, the SKX will be happily ticking away, daring Tiger Sharks to come and bite it on the arse.

Let's see yours!!

Great watch. Until I got my Seamaster a few weeks ago, my everyday watch was a Seiko Pepsi SKX007j. Thing takes a beating and rarely shows signs of it, mine has been tbrough a lot the last several years and I still love it. I was at an Omega AD last weekend ordering a new band for my Seamaster and they had a used Omega Seamaster AT come in and she was going to give it to me for a good price but I walked out of there with a beautiful black and gold Seiko baby tuna diver instead. Love it, enjoy yours, they are great watches.
