Hello all, I found this watch at a thrift shop for $10. My research suggests it may be a Gene Kranz from December of 1970? I don’t know anything about these watches so looking for your input. I do know condition is key when pricing watches and this isn’t the best example. I am keeping the watch and would like to hear your thoughts on restoration possibilities and value. I still need to get the back opened to inspect. Thanks! 😎

Ok, no replies yet so should I assume it is a fake or a POS! 🤣 Again it was found at a thrift shop so my hopes aren’t very high! 😎

Definitely not. Looks like you have a well worn and well loved Gene, sans bracelet.
It'll probably clean up well and with a new crystal (310T14AN) should look OK, although it's hard to tell what the dial and hands are like because of the current condition of the crystal.

Hardly a collector grade specimen, but it would make a nice daily driver.

Oh wow, that’s cool. Thanks for the reply! I definitely want to replace the crystal and happy to know it’s a real Gene!! Am I correct to know this watch was only made for a few years? I think the serial number dates it to December 1970?

Nice and lucky find! Yes, december 1970.
Bezels often became ghosted on these. I also see an original rubber strap, probably from the same era, which is a nice bonus, but not to be used because it might give out.
A service, a glass change (or at least polishing), a khaki nato and you're good to go! 😉

Thanks! And good to know about the strap because I can’t figure out how to get it off and was gonna chop it off with a saw today! 🤣🤣

Just let the watch sit in the sun for a while so the strap softens a bit, then you can use a springbar tool to remove it.

If it's gone old and hard, use a craft knife to slice from lug to lug to remove it.

Ok, last question…. maybe. When I look at other Seiko 6119-8460 watches the serial number are all numbers. The serial on my watch has a letter ‘D’ in it?? Any idea why?

0D8431?

That makes sense, thanks!! 🙏 I just haven’t seen any with a letter in the serial yet. Any idea if this is an early model? I think they were only made for a few years but I’m not sure. Anyway, thanks again for your help!!

I don't know if it's an early model or not, but check out this thread for a watch with letters in the serial.

I did notice quite a bit of watchmakers marks on the case back. I am not a watchmaker but hopefully the movement is not too bad!! 🙏😎

perhaps it was regularly maintained.

Yes, I hope it was. The more I tinker with this watch the more I like it! I think it is a cool old watch!! 😎 Now it needs a new crystal.

Deep scratches on the crystal but no cracks. Polish it out!
