Hello Everyone,

I am interested in purchasing a 1963 Seamaster De Ville for my fiancé as a wedding gift. The face of the watch as taken on a patina, which I don't mind and actually really like the unique nature, but was wondering if I should shy away from this for any reason? I've attached an image for reference. Thank you in advance!

Seamasters De Ville are very common watches - so you will find a more attractive specimen easily at a moderate price.

I would give it a pass and keep on searching

If the year is based on the movement serial number, the date tables are only an approximate estimate but you may know that already. From the photo, the case and hands look to be in good condition, and it has the correct crown. Patina is a matter of personal preference. The dial looks original and the patina is even, so I would be ok with it. For others it would be a deal breaker. If your fiancé likes patina, it may be a good choice.

I assume there are no caseback engravings and would want to see a movement photo. Also, is it serviced. Good luck with your gift shopping.

Aside from the condition of the dial, I don't see any obvious issues at first glance. However, if possible it's good to see photos from other angles (case-back, inside, etc.).

Thanks for all the feedback so far. Here are additional images of the back and inside for reference. This has been serviced and comes with a one year warranty which seems pretty good.

The only minor thing I am noticing is that the crown does not seem to sit flush against the case. Perhaps the photos were taken with the crown slightly extended. But that would be unusual for a professional seller like this, and it just looks a bit odd for a watch that has been serviced recently by a professional. This would be an easy fix, but since you are presumably paying a premium price, such little details should be addressed IMO.

Thank you for pointing this out. I will definitely bring it up with the seller to see if this was an oversight or if there is an underlying issue.

I think I have seen that watch before. If it is the one I am thinking of, I bought a '58 2964 seamaster earlier this year from that seller and am very happy with it. Overpaid some probably but it is a little unique and I plan on keeping it for a long time and I know where it came from with a service. He also has a youtube presence that I enjoy, so I considered it part of supporting that effort also.

Besides the patina, and the minor issue with the crown, the watch looks unpolished and has quite a fresh caseback. Difficult to see whether the plexi is original. You should be able to see a small Omega logo in the middle of it.

The spotting on the dial would bother me. As these have a one piece case they’re generally fairly well protected against water ingress and as such it’s not hard to find one with a good dial. So personally, I’d try to find one with a better dial
