Newbie Q: i have done some digging and learnt so much already from this site - thank you, but what can you tell me about this watch? The owner was in the forces from 1940-73, I don't know when it dates from but it looks like it has had a life, as he did. It stops/starts when picked up, I can't feel a wind mechanism - but I can't tell if it is automatic? I can alter time and date. Should I get it cleaned/repaired/valued? if so suggestions in Scotland welcome. Many thanks

Not automatic. Have you tried to turn the crown?

Looks like a bargain basement manual wind model probably from the late 1960s, maybe with a 600 or 1000 series movement, 613 at a guess. I'd want that very cheap since it needs an immediate service which will add ~£200 minimum to your outlay (plus a new crown if you can find one), and when you are finished you have something worth maybe £250-300 so by my maths that makes it worth maybe £50-100 at present. What is the asking price?

From the corrosion/damage/greenish tint on the dial, I would bet the movement has same.

Water damaged not patina

Thanks, does the dial without "Seamaster" and backplate inscription match your suggested date? And you don't think this could be service issue?

Btw I don't think I said I was selling

The dial vs backplate markings isn’t a big concern. Omega often mixed and matched models and casebacks.

I hadn’t assumed you were selling, in fact you are not authorised to do so here as a noob so it didn’t enter my head, my pricing guidance was because like most new posters asking for info I had assumed you were buying. My main point is that this isn’t a high value piece and the cost to make it useful is a big chunk of its value. It’s nice it has a forces connection but in this case it doesn’t add value.
