Seamaster 300m vs Planet Ocean 39.5

Hey everyone!

I'm waiting for another watch from the AD, but if that doesn't come soon, I will cancel my order and probably buy an Omega dive watch.

That being said, I like both the Seamaster 300m and the Planet Ocean 39.5

I dress very casual, jeans and v neck kind of guy.

I also like to wear the heck outta my watches. Any one of these that I pick would be in daily rotation with the Speedmaster.

Maybe even be my daily and then I'll wear the Speedmaster more rarely.

Any recommendations on which to go with and why?

I did some research and they both have the same movement.

The 300m seems like an Omega classic, kinda like the Submariner is to Rolex.

But the PO, I like the size, and it somehow seems less flashy than the 300m because of the fully brushed bracelet and all.

In all honesty, if the other watch fails to come through, I could probably buy both the 300m and the PO with the same money.

But I need to stop that mentality hahaha

Any reason why you're looking at the PO 39.5mm? It is a small watch compared to the 300m. The 43.5mm version would be more comparable.

I like the size of the smaller PO.

I used to have a 36mm Datejust, then a 40mm Submariner, so the 43.5 seems a little on the big side for me.

36-42 is my “sweet spot,” as well. Did you like how your Datejust and Submariner wore? The 43.5 of the 300m doesn’t wear as large as you’d think, and I find the thinness nice compared to the thicker 39.5 PO.

I feel that the 300m has a more consistent design year to year and will thus age a bit better than the PO. However, the skeleton hands of the 300m make it a bit harder to read at a glance for me - the PO has better legibility.

To me, the form factor of the 5-digit Submariner is perfection for a dive watch, and none of OMEGA’s current offerings quite line up with it how I’d like.

I think the PO 39.5 is the ultimate dive watch. If you like that size, I wouldn't bother with the Seamaster 300m.

I bought the SMP300 just over a year ago, couldn't fall in love with it, something didn't click everytime I looked at it. So I bought a 43.5 PO and have never looked back. The PO actually wears smaller on the wrist than the 300, obviously not height wise but it is perfectly balanced. I wanted to have the same affection that I had for my original Blue Wave Bond 300 but alas it never happened. IMO the PO is superior, almost making the 300 seem cheap and almost toy like. For me they just didn't get it right.

I had the same problem, in blue. It was a gorgeous watch, I had no issues with the hands or legibility, but it was just too big, too heavy, too uncomfortable and maybe just a little too polished (shiny). Got rid of it (here, on our classifieds) and bought a Tudor BB 58 in blue, which I just love.

However, I am kind of leaning toward the 39.5 PO myself. I'm a little hung up on the price right now though, so it may be a while. But the size is a sweet spot for me.

Rule for PO: rest 1.5mm to the size, thus 43,5 feels like a 42.

And the bracelet on the new smp300 is just horrid! Too big for the watch, no taper, it over powers the watch.

I think the differences as a daily wear watch is in the proportions. 300m is 42 x 13.5 while the PO 39.5 x 14.16. I would prefer the wider yet thinner watch meaning I would prefer to daily wear the 300m. Contrast this to the first gen PO even the 45.5 was only 15mm thick. To me proportion makes a better wearing and better looking watch.

I would disagree slightly with this.

While the short lugs and articulated bracelet definitely let you wear a 43.5 on a smaller wrist, I definitely would not say the 39.5 wears like a 38mm at all. I have owned other 38mm watches, and they seem tiny on my 7.25" / 18.5mm wrist. The 39.5 and 43.5 POs are unique in that they both wear well on a wide variety of wrist sizes.

One of the notable differences is that the 43.5 is nearly 2mm taller than the 39.5. That was one of the biggest factors driving me to the 39.5.

Good point actually, that's very true, but you knew what I meant, one being a diver, and the other being a DIVER.
