I've just bought a 552 seamaster 300 dial from someone in Canada through Ebay, it's very degraded .On the back is 59 star 552 but its painted black on the back, all of my dials are un painted on the back (I only understand 165024 and 166024) and I wondered if this is maybe from an earlier 300 165.014 ? I havent paid for it yet and I'm now thinking it could be poss fake. Am I being stupid?

This is the back of a 165.024 dial:

And this is the back of a 165.014 dial - note the markings:

The one you have is from a 165.014 in my view...

Cheers, Al

I cannot see any difference in the markings,@Archer can you elaborate on why one is 014 and the other 024

As an aside the earlier dials appear to lack pinholes, op's and Archers 014.

On a second look the op's dial does appear to have a pin hole, so perhaps a later dial? Or is that a scratch, or dust?

pin hole

Slightly derailing as I would like to ask about the pin hole(s)..

What is a technical purpose of these pin holes? I know they are big thing at aged Big Triangle dials, but haven't seen them on dials with 12 arabic hour index.

Is it possible that dial has only one pin hole, at six o'clock but no hole at 12 o'clock?

I am not sure anyone knows what they are for? Possibly to line up the lume and the dial indices when printing it on? They are usually present on 024 dials but often covered by thicker lume, so invisible from the front. They should be at both 12 and 6. Looking at these dials again I think the 'holes' I am seeing are dust, stains or scratches.

I think down the road, when the lume ages, they are likely to be seen from the front.

You probably nailed a placement of potential hole at 6 o'clock but 12 o'clock yeah it's not there.
