Im just starting the hobby and trying to be wise( if that means anything at all regarding passions) Hoping to keep that N low but I have to admit that if my deeds would follow my thoughts that would not be wise... Lets see what happens in near future

Patience and restraint was so hard to have when I first caught the watch bug. Since you may be in the stage of learning what you like, its hard not to buy a few things that you’ll end up regretting. But if you do, then buy condition, condition, condition, and at least you might get your money back out of them.

I don’t mind having some pocket watches sitting around unworn, but it doesn’t feel right, to me, to have wrist watches not in rotation. My N might be 8. Oddly, I am considering a modern watch for the first time, one of the new black dialed 38mm aqua terra’s

I'm in a weird phase, where I have a few I really want to buy, but I only want to wear maybe 3-4 of the watches in my collection (out of 20+). I guess I still like seeing the other ones in the box, even if I don't wear them?

For some, that is the essense of "collection"; finding the best condition and maintaining it.

I think that's part of it. Also: I really like picking a watch to match the activity I'm doing, and I think I've found the 'best watch' for me in a key few categories.

Maybe I just need new hobbies. If I buy a boat, I can go on a hunt for my favorite regatta timer. 😁

I’m pretty cool with mine at the moment, the only +1 I keep looking at is the Ikepod Seaslug which is a weird watch I really want for some reason.

Did you find your 6138-8020?

You just gave some people the idea of booking a spaceflight with Elon.
And so have the excuse for buying more Speedy's

I think if you can afford that flight, you can afford ALL the speedies. At least, the entire current lineup.

I am done with the acquisition phase and now in the collection phase. That means I have to let some pieces go that don’t fit.

I am also in the servicing phase, which is quite stressful. I have one watch out that had been serviced but started over-banking. The watchmaker is going through a bunch of different mainsprings to lower the amplitude. I hope he can pull it off! I have another at a different watchmaker, and I have two more (at least) to send out. Just got a Tudor back from a highly respected watchmaker and the plexi came back with stress cracks all around the base; why not swap it out? Did it crack during pressure test? It is like you have three tiers of watchmakers working on your pieces. The best have a huge waiting list. Some that have availability that do an OK job but have not been perfect. And some are pretty damn good, but can you trust them with something that is mint and vintage and super rare?

Nope I did some shopping around for a while and the condition issues and number of put together examples sort of put me off the reference for the time being

The longer I have been interested in watches I prefer to have fewer pieces. The more complications, unique or limited the watch, the more I like it.

I guess it’s the mature thing to do, stop buying things just because they are ‘good value’ or ‘look nice’.
It pays off to wait until that piece with your name on it comes along. Because this thread needs pictures:

As a relative newbie I’m definitely one of those who has been buying fairly cheap, random watches that just caught my eye. There’s no theme to what I’ve acquired, which is up to around 20 watches now. I realise the folly of that, because even a watch for pennies needs a service and that’s where the money goes, so I bought cheap watches, paid for them to be serviced, and now they sit in my watch box hardly worn, some never, because my daily wearer is a modern Railmaster, the most expensive watch I have and the one I find most comfortable and enjoyable to wear.

So now I’m determined to stop buying like that, and to try to enhance what I own with better quality watches that I can’t just buy on a whim because I’m not a wealthy person. I probably won’t sell off any watches because they won’t fetch much and so they’re probably better off sitting quietly for a few years and I’ll let the children decide what to do with them, but never say never.

The real question for me is: am I actually a collector? Since participating on OF I’ve been fascinated by the depth of interest people have in watches, the completists, the themed collectors, etc, and I realise that’s not what this is about for me. I like watches firstly as pieces of precision engineering, and secondly as adornments, in the way people like any jewellery, without considering themselves collectors of jewellery.

So I don’t think I’m really a watch collector. That may change of course. I think I’m a watch accumulator.

Thanks for your thoughts. I am currently building my taste wihch is not that easy in a stage where every single watch seems amazing. From that start point of a half built taste at least, Implanning to follow your condition, condition, condition suggestion that seems right to me

I was you until I fell into a collection theme to focus on which slowed the watch buying up.

I usually say the best size of a collection is N+1, where N = the number of watches currently in the collection. But for the first time ever, I feel my N is currently not lacking any +1 ...don’t ask me what N is, I couldn’t tell you but I would guess somewhere between 2 hands and feet worth of fingers and toes and double that. That might also have to do with relative ‘diversity’...even in similar models. And it wasn’t curated, it just happened.

Dare I call myself satisfied? Is something wrong with me? Any other satisfied folk out there? Or is this just a phase?

I started buying/ hoarding/ collecting watches (mostly Omega vintage) in 2012. The next 3 years were furious pace of buying (I think the record was 3 watches in a week) and a little selling. This forum and my "new" watch collector/trader friends become potent enabler. In 2016 I slowed down (only 2 watches in a year). Then after that I stopped.
I switched my attention to pen collection for about 1 - 1.5 years. Then it also stopped.

The feeling was gone. The rush, the dopamine high when you got your "grail", pride when you show your catch, it was gone. I sold almost half of my collection with little remorse.

Will I catch the bug again? I dont know. Am I satisfied? Probably. Certainly you are not alone.

Sometimes I felt I’m there already. Like the equation wasn’t S (satisfaction) = N+1 but S = N. It didn’t las long. Ever. Now it’s N+2 but considering AD promised to deliver new Snoopy, it’s more or less N+1. But I’m sure there will be another +1. And another. And...
