·Hello OF! I wanted to make an introduction post to say hi to the group. Long time lurker, minimum poster. I would like to get my post count past 200 so I can comment and post in the FS/FT threads. I would like to use this thread to document my experiences.
I just picked up my first Omega, an American reference 1958 gold filled Seamaster GX6250 on eBay for $470. It is a runner but needs a service. I picked this up specifically so I could get some practice on the movement. I am taking watchmaking classes next week here in Cincinnati at the AWCI and have some lofty career goals that are moving me in this direction. I am 39years old and am a quality inspector in the aerospace/defense ecosphere. My vocation is welding and fabrication by trade and am a certified welding inspector through the AWS. I am wanting to pick up some new challenging skillsets.
I only recently got DEEP into watches. My wife and I just celebrated 10yrs together and gifted each other nice timepieces. She got me a new Breitling Premier "pistachio" chronograph, and I got her a 178274 DateJust 31 with MOP dial on an oyster bracelet. I dream of an Omega collection featuring the greats from the 1940s-1960s. I am constantly hunting Suverans, beefy lug Seamasters, Devilles, (specifically the rare dial American references), dog leg Constellations, and of course Speedies. My grail watch is a an Ed White pre-moon. I want to hit some pretty important personal milestones before I gift that one to myself. My wife and I are fortunate to travel a lot and have a pretty far reach to get to fun places. I want to hunt Suverans the next time we are up in Scandinavia. We are currently in the process of building a new home in Cincinnati and I look forward to setting up my atelier and fabrication shop.
anyway, Below are some shots of this old girl. Original radium dial and hands. The case is in well worn condition with the gold cap being worn through the edges of three of the four lugs. I already sourced a newer gold plated clover crown for it. Its not a great example, but again, I bought it to gain some experience. I love these old beefy lug cases. Not sure I will keep it, or move it on to a new owner. I want my collection to be fluid, as I do not want to be that collector that has over 200 pieces and never wears any of the fun pieces. I am the same way with cars. I want to drive and enjoy them, not store them to impress others.
