" *think* it’s best to purchase lightly used watches over new ones in most cases..." - care to elaborate?

Personally, I try to buy new watches as they would have papers, etc. and I would be "writing my own history" with them. Would like to hear your justification.
For me:
1)95%
2)95%
3)5%
You skip the depreciation (like when buying used cars)

  1. 43.75%
  2. 37.5%
  3. 50%
I inherited some from family members so I didn’t purchase them, but they were purchased new originally. Perhaps the distribution should be more like:-
1. 100%
2. 100%
3. 50%

I don't know the percentage as I don't have any idea how many watches I own but...

I bought 7 new from Omega and still own 5 of those, mostly LE Speedmasters

Most of them are watches that would have cost more to buy used than new though like the Speedy Tuesday etc, or the Apollo 8 Darkside that was really hard to get initially.

Bought a Modern Speedy in 2013 and was going to buy a Sub in 2018 so it was the lack of SS Rolex watches that afforded me the coin to buy the Speedy Tuesday 1 and 2.

1 - 50%
2 - 67%
3 - 25%

Purchased my Speedy/SMPc new before I trusted the preowned market. Purchased my SM300 MC for a deep discount on Chrono24.

For whatever reason the “purchased new” watches I will never sell, but the SM300 feels expendable.

1. Roughly what percentage of your watch collection was purchased new?

2. Roughly what percentage of your non-vintage watch collection was purchased new?

3. Roughly what percentage of your watch collection is vintage?

I’m asking these questions because I *think* it’s best to purchase lightly used watches over new ones in most cases...just wondering if the statistics from you savvy veterans will corroborate my guess.

1. 30%.
2. Depends on the definition of "vintage", but if non-vintage is less than 50-years-old, then about 36%.
3. If vintage is at least 50-years-old, then 20% (goes up to 43% if at least 20-years-old).

Here’s a different slant on the question. Among your watches which you acquired new, which is your oldest? I have an Accutron 214 acquired in 1964 (56 years ago), and my Rolex Air-King, (acquired 49 years ago).

A newbie?

I started getting “serious” around 2015 with my first Hamilton. I flipped most of my collection in 2018 when i started focusing on an Omega collection. But yes definitely a newbie. The depth of knowledge/sheer experience of the members of this forum never fails to impress me.

All my Omegas so far have been vintage, pre-owned watches. When I do purchase a new model, I'm definitely going to consider a lightly used version. Not only for avoiding the inevitable depreciation, but usually someone has already put a minor scratch on the caseback or bracelet, which frees me up from trying to keep my new watch "perfect."
