I bought my Rolex Submariner in 1989/90, just walked into a shop [...] and walked out with the the watch. I could have bought more than one if I wanted..

It will probably be like that again in the future.

My son has the watch now and I don’t have any pics. I can get one though.
I see my son every day, he works with me in the business.
The watch still looks great and keep great time but for some reason you can't change the date by using the crown.
I had it serviced serviced shortly before I gave it to him.
The reason for the service was because the dial was crazed.
I think at the time Rolex wanted nearly £400 to replace it
I agreed, but when I said I want the old dial back, the did it for free.

In Geneve the omega boutique with overbooking, the rolex boutique with a line on the street and the swatch store selling a lot of bioceramics.

On the other hand, rolex bucherer is like a funeral but with watches to see. Blancpain and jaeger lecoultre are good choices with lovely ADs.

Well, no one mentioned Tudor a cheaper way to go and should be in stock some of their new stuff look great there snowflake GMT looks good. In the old days before Tudor restarted making the snowflake again, we called the vintage ones the poor man's sub got my Tudor Snowflake 7021 for 2000 head only off the MWR PX sales section forum. The vintage snowflake still might be cheaper and easier to get than a new Rolex sub.

Or maybe a vintage Omega 300 I got both

Or the Omega Speed master I went vintage in the old days due to price miss those days I am sort of out of the watch game because I can't afford the price, they want for them these days. but if you got enough saved for a new Rolex sub you have enough for vintage just do your homework and buy from trusted sellers you might ever save a buck on a vintage Tudor. The weird thing is the amount of money I got in these I might be what only one goes for or not enough for one of these that's how much watch collecting has changed since I started collecting use to be 3 for the price of one. There still some deals you just got to look harder.

I bought my GMT Master II in the Wempe Store ,Frankfurt (Germany) Airport during an very long layover. Not only did I get it duty/vat free, but i was able to negotiate a bit and left with a watch on my wrist. This is as it should be.

Ahhhh, duty free shops in airports with cheap luxury goods and chocolates. Get a Rolex, a sterling silver zippo, a Gucci purse and a box of Belgian chocolates in one shot- holiday shopping done and I didn’t even have to divert from my route!
I’m waxing nostalgic for the 80’s right now.

I think this is a weird question (OP) and thread. Buy what you like/want and be done with it. For me, Rolex is for lawyers, not for me. The moon watch is and always will be unique. No disrespect intended, but it’s been my experience.

The sub and its fame/status are a funny thing to me
When i grew up in the 80s Rolex was already the de-facto status symbol, almost to the level it is today, but you could buy one if you wanted
The thing though is, the status symbol always was two-tone and precious metal diamond-encrusted day-dates, datejusts, and maybe Daytonas, Subs and other sport watches just weren’t mentioned or worn as status symbols! You had to actually explain “Yes it is a Rolex” to most people.
If you wanted an entry level recognisable Rolex you bought an Oyster Perpetual (but then that really didn’t count either)

Completely the opposite of today!

back in those days omega enjoyed the same status really (at least in the competition horses world), and i fondly remember looking at them as a kid. This left an impression on me where Omega was always what I wanted, and Rolex was already for nouveau rich showoffs

none of this is important, i am too old to be impressed by status symbols (ok owning your own airplane still gets me!), but it is the way I remember and still how i see the 2 brands

Just adding onto this thread for no good reason because I want to ensure that every silly Rolex vs. Omega thread reaches at least 5 pages. 🤨

Well ... Omega has the superior name.

Rolex? Not so much. It rhymes with too many other fabricated product names. It's a bit unimaginative.

Rolex

Timex
GovX
Elmex
Kotex
Tampax
Pemex

How many more "ex" products can we come up with?

Ginger or Mary Ann? Betty or Veronica? Rolls or Bentley? What a horrible dilemma!

To the OP it, sounds like your uncle’s story left quite an impression. Luxury watches are, in my opinion, more about personal experience and preference.

If you’ve been think Rolex Sub all these years then that’s probably what you should get.

Right now the market is good. Of the used Subs, the 14060 is what I’d personally get of “modern era”.

I find the best proportioned (doesn’t feel fat which the newest fixed and upsizing to 41mm), cleanest with 2 lines and has al the modern advantages with sapphire and an advanced movement.

If you’re not comfortable buying private, then going with a large reputable grey dealer is probably best for you.
