Rolex vs Omega

Not too late but too expensive. Wasn't long ago I could buy 14060's all day long at the AD in Cebu City Philippines for $1900 when the Peso was weak. Second hand I was still paying less than $2000 for them there in 2017.

How's the vintage watch hunting game looking in the Philippines these days? If only I'd been into watches when my wife and I used to visit more frequently back in the early 2000s!

I’m a bit jealous of you guys who weren’t late to the party. Luckily, I like DateJusts which don’t seem to be as popular as the professional watches and retail price isn’t too bad. Nobody knows what the future holds but I doubt it’s lower prices.

You're right. Modern Subs are better in every way. Better water resistance, better lume, better bracelet and clasp, scratch resistant bezel etc..

Well, I prefer vintage...

When I see a modern Sub...

Blingy dreck (my opinion only of course)...

Say what you will about contemporary Rolex and their business practices... but that's one well-designed and proportioned watch. I definitely got into this hobby too late. I sometimes daydream about selling off most of my collection and just picking up a 1513 or 1680.

It is all about the proportions, the slim tapered lugs, the curve over the wrist, the sleek lines- they were very well designed and didn’t need to be inflated- it just makes them look tubby.

It might be getting better for foreigners to do business, or give competition to locals for purchasing items like used watches now that the psychotic killer of a president has left office. He's the reason we left and came stateside, along with wanting our kid to start attending USA schools. However with the current president being, incredibly, a marcos who knows. We still have our crew there of relatives that buy and send us interesting watches but for a foreigner to be knocking around the big cities buying for himself like I was doing is still a bit risky.

If you want the experience your uncle had, do some shopping for a vintage Sub. Enjoy taking the time to learn about them and the differences in the models. And in the process study the online dealers and get a sense of their reputation and pricing. Don't make this just slapping money down on a counter for a watch you know so little about. And it isn't about Omega vs Rolex...it's about enjoying the learning and the hunt for the watch that really makes you smile. To quote Hannibal Lechter, "all good things come to those who wait."

If you want a watch similar to what your relative most likely had but not wanting to get in to the earlier and more expensive vintage plexi subs I would go for a 14060 two liner (dial being less crowded). Still a lot of them around and parts readily available.

And for some strange reason Sea-Dweller 16600 can often be bought cheaper than the subs of the same era.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Yeah, my wife is hesitant to take the whole family back. Her parents literally met in prison during martial law era, so you imagine how she feels about the current government. I guess I should put my dreams of chasing down cheap, vintage rolexes aside and just find a quiet, uncrowded beach when we finally visit again.

I lean Omega personally, not because of the longer history, arguably better feats, and the arguably more innovative ethos, but because both my grandfathers wore Omega and we still have those watches. It is the family tie to the brand that seals the deal for me.

Would I wear Rolex? Absolutely and may yet get one. Stunning classic designs, mostly unchanged for 50 years. Often imitated, never replicated. Incredible history and feats and build quality. 100% brand recognition.

My point is your family tie is to Rolex and that watch…. Seamaster and Speedmaster are top-tier watches and equal to the Sub, but I think if one has their head set on one thing, don’t settle and be patient.

Oh I wouldn't put your ambitions of finding some cool watches on the cheap there aside, so long as you are not going to take up residence and do it for a prolonged time. One could easily and safely hunt around, find some stuff to buy and then head out as a tourist. No one would regard you as a threat to their business. It's the expats-foreigners who reside there and do business, especially anything jewelry/watch related that need to watch out who they upset. The massive pawn shop operations there, where there is practically two or three per block, don't like outside competition. Part time deal hunting fun is fine in the Philippines. However I would not suggest Manila no matter what. Leave that place for the Filipinos to rule. If you ever do consider going for vacation then certainly contact us as we have been everywhere in those 15+ years we lived there, and can steer you in the right direction to good watch hunting grounds as well as beach spots for family style vacations.

Oh wow, thanks for the offer to give us some of your insight! I'll definitely take you up on that at some point. I expect we'll make it back in maybe 1-2 years. Our son's almost old enough to handle the trip without too much fuss. I definitely don't enjoy Manila - way too crowded. Prefer to head out to Bacolod or Palawan.

OP, sorry for the thread drift. I think the general consensus here is save up and go find a 4-digit sub? And then, keep saving a little more and get a speedy?

You buy a rolex to impress a car salesman, you buy a Omega to impress a watchmaker. Or was that IWC...? 📖

How is it to your advantage to let the car salesman know you've got plenty of money and like to throw it around?

Only when you need to buy 3 Volkswagens 4 Audi’s and a Skoda to get on the wait list for a Porsche…they already know you are committed to that game.

I bought my Rolex Submariner in 1989/90, just walked into a shop, paid £1100 and walked out with the the watch. I could have bought more than one if I wanted..

The young crypto bois cannot wrap their hair-gelled, tracksuited, steering wheel shot, minds around facts like this... and for me it's one of the few perks of being old.

Also us young regular people who just wish the prices weren’t so inflated so we could buy nice watches.

It does suck. I really wish the used watch market was as open new collectors as it was 20 years ago- even 10! The competition wasn’t fierce- there were of course rarities that were on people’s radar and of course brand names were known so they did have more value than most- but they were really just old watches to 99% of the population so we weren’t competing against some kid in a cubical with an IG account- that dude was thrilled with his Kenneth Cole watch!
