Marketing. Blancpain was released before the Submariner, Smiths went to the top of Everest and Omega landed on the moon; however, the Submariner, Explorer, and Daytona rule the sports watch world. Personally, I prefer history! Me and me alone.

New subs ain't the same as what your uncle had, not even close.

You're right. Modern Subs are better in every way. Better water resistance, better lume, better bracelet and clasp, scratch resistant bezel etc..

So says you. No one is going diving deep enough to need the current water resistance. They now use better electronic instruments if professional diving. Lume? you really need the brighter, longer lasting lume to aim while taking a leak at 3 am? Bracelet and clasp? You mean those super thick and heavy hunks of swollen metal that weigh down your wrist and are needlessly cumbersome? The early style oysters are still on the job 50+ years later. Let's see how those new bracelets hold up under their own excessive weight. Scratch resistant bezel? Try pricing a service replacement when they get knocked and crack. Service bezel inserts are cheap and easy to install.

You can keep those modern swollen, overweight grotesque caricatures of a Submariner.

I cannot like this post enough!

For the OP, Rolexes have gotten silly expensive- even the used ones. They are no better than anything Omega makes in their Pro line, just different.
The sweet spot for used Subs (if you aren’t a collector) are the ones from the early 00’s. They are post Tritium and lug holes so aren’t as desirable by the crazy collectors. Don’t pay the premium for full kits with boxes and papers- you can’t wear the box and papers so why pay extra for them.
What your uncle had was probably a 1680 (if it has a date) or 5513 without date. Those are silly expensive now and only the hard core collectors are willing to pay for them.
The last era that resembles your uncles watches (proportions and style) are the 16610 (date) or the 14060. Both of these can be had under $10k (with some wear & tear without box/papers) and are easily serviced by any reputable independent watchmaker.
As we always suggest to anyone new to the hobby (or just trying to buy a watch) buy the seller! Make sure they are reputable, make sure they have great reviews and feedback and if the deal too good to be true- it is.

With all due respect, I would never recommend to someone new to the hobby to go vintage. Especially not when it comes to Subs.

Five digit sub with superdome, rattly bracelet with hollow endlinks, aluminum bezel and stamped tin fold-over clasp…just as they are meant to be!

Will kick a modern subs ass up and down the school yard and take it’s lunch money.

Now you're desperately reaching. I said SERVICE bezel, not an over priced rare vintage bezel.

Fair enough

Funny how we went from Rolex vs Omega to modern Subs vs vintage Subs, on an Omega Forum at that. It goes to show how passionate people can become when it comes to the Submariner and what an impact it has made on the entire watch community. Frankly, I'm just teasing you guys. I love both old and new subs. Who wouldn't want to wear a mint 5513 ? I still love the modern ones better though 😉

Not talking “vintage”- the late 5- digits can still be found at reputable jewelers all over the country in their used cases. They come up here from trusted dealers and private sellers all the time. I’m not talking about eBay!

For most people, new and old subs don't look that much different...

To the OP, if you have been wanting a sub for 35 years, you should accumulate a bit more funds and just get one from the grey market. That is only way to scratch that itch. After that you can start looking into Omegas 😁

Please do not post pictures of this anymore. It just makes me yearn for my 14060 that I moved on many years ago.... I would have gone down the route of the crystal conversion for sure.

Not too late but too expensive. Wasn't long ago I could buy 14060's all day long at the AD in Cebu City Philippines for $1900 when the Peso was weak. Second hand I was still paying less than $2000 for them there in 2017.

Yup, it’s painful. These were all very approachable watches not that long ago. We are talking the 20-teens, not 1985.
