I present to you the most versatile of watches:

The Plain DJane 1600 from 1967 (this is a modified 1603 - the bezel being the only difference)
What other vintage watch can do all that this watch can?
Go for a swim - h-ll even diving! And then on to the board meeting or to work as a plummer - this watch delivers - whatever and wherever you need it to be. Wear it on a alligator strap, a jubilee or oyster bracelet. Everything works.
Show me another vintage watch that can do all that and that you dare to use for all that. This is a challenge to the forum 馃嵖

Love these older Oyster Perpetual cased models - the Zephyr the most. If the wart was gone I'd own one. The dial edge is just enough to give it depth.

Absolutely beautiful, apart from the cyclops. I have tried in the past to love the pimple but it's never gonna happen.

"This is a challenge to the forum 馃嵖"
I will let you have some more time but as for now it looks like "a walk in the park victory". I guess most vintage competitors fall on the swimming/diving part.
No one here with a sixties "dress" Universal Geneve Polerouter or Eterna Kontiki with a screw in crown?

There are 60's and 70's Seamasters that had good water resistance without clunky dive cases. If I remember tonight I'll check AJTT for a couple examples.

Still gorgeous. That dial color is my favorite on these '60s vintage DJs.

Meh. It's a nice watch, to be sure. But this is the one that makes me swoon every time I see it...馃グ 21603301319_5f8f70051a_b.jpg

It's a very nice looking watch, but the challenge is paradoxical: everywhere else on the forum, it seems people are looking for all sorts of good reasons to justify a plurality of watches for every occasion: this one measures speed, that one heartbeats or the distance of explosions, this one is for gardening, that one for fancy gala dinner...
So why is it suddenly that one watch that does everything is a virtue?馃槣

I find the same with my grey dialled DJ, I think its the grey dial that makes it so stealthy. They really are a t-shirt to tuxedo watch.

If I remember correctly I wrote this piece (three years ago) because of someone bashing rollies for being too much of a bling watch. And even if I am a strong advocate for diversity (and hoarding) in collecting watches - my mind sometimes lingers around what would be my "exit watch". When my retirement money is finished and I am casting glances on tin cans in the dog food shelves at the super market (not having a dog) - what watch will be the last to leave me. It could be this one - even if I have others I like more today. When being robbed by the undertaker - this might be what he removes before me going in the ground.

It is a good watch - maybe not the best at anything but certainly the choice for everything.

the other one? Explorer !

That is cheating. It is essentially the same watch - sans date.

To some of us who 馃ぎevery time we see a cyclops, "sans date" makes all the difference in the world! Personally I find the Speedmaster very versatile and wear it often for dress and casual. The new Explorer I really trips my trigger and could also be the one the undertaker steals from my wrist (assuming I live long enough to collect the funds to buy the 2016 Explorer I). I agree that your example is top notch for those not phobic about the cyclops. 馃憤

Speedmaster - of course very versatile - but do you go diving with it? DJ vs Speedy 1-0.

I have actually had the plan to grind down the wart and polish it out. It would make it even more plain DJane. Maybe this weekend...

I don't dive, just snorkel and a properly serviced Speedy will be just find for snorkeling if push comes to shove (although my old Gshock would get the duty anyway. My personal scoring excludes diving therefore DJ - 1, Speedy - 1.
