Would any of the Rolex lovers care to pass comment on this piece?
Appearance, the good, or doubtful there are any, bad points to look out for with this model or any other comments.
Bracelet end pieces appear to small ?
An indication of value would be good but to be honest reckon it is out with my current budget 馃檨

I'm not a Rolex lover but that's one of the models I do like. Looks authentic, just needs some TLC.

That is weird. As if they're a mm too skinny.

It's a gilt dial, so it will command a premium, roughly 7 to 8 k. It has the rivet bracelet so that,s nearly 1500 off the top if in good condition. Dial appears very nice but need more images to be sure. I'd love an explorer like this but they are definitely out of my range. They are quickly escalating in price and will continue to do so due to finding a quality example. However, I'd actually pass on this one as the lugs have been polished to the point where I could use them as a toothpick to clean my teeth.

Many thanks one and all, it is certainly a model I would love to own one day.
Tbh had not appreciated the lugs issue, best to ask, as a novice I thought they looked ok 馃憥

We need to know whether this is a ref.1016 or 5500 before we can really discuss value. And additional photos. End pieces are definitely incorrect. I'm not 100% sure about the dial in any case. Many 5500s "Explorer" dials are refinished (and not always admitted to that).

Thanks Adam,
My omission should have said it is a 1016. Only photo available but I am going to view the piece tomorrow and will take some of my own photographs.

Okay, that narrows it down! Actually, I think this one has a 19mm (7205) riveted bracelet instead of the correct 20mm (7206). It's not just the endpieces. But you can always wear it on a strap. Here is my 1966 gilt 1016 for comparison (on a folded Oyster 7836, and stap). The fonts on the one you show are definitely different, if you look closely. I'm not 100% sure whether there were different variations on the non-chapter ring gilt dials (1963-66).

馃憤 again Adam, as you say a marked difference in the fonts. The hands on the one I am looking at are obviously not in great condition.
Also I can't quite understand why someone with a watch of that potential quality would have the wrong bracelet ?
Not far to travel for a wee look so we shall see what transpires.

Bring a loupe if you have one, to examine the dial, or hopefully the seller will have one.

If you don't have a loupe ??? Before case back openers etc. I reckon it should be the first piece of kit.

That's the difference between Dennis and myself, I tell it like it is with a couple of question marks, whereas Dennis skirts around the issue like a true diplomat.
Nice Mr. D. 馃憤

Viewed and discounted, just did not have the right feel about it, any others sometimes go by the feel of the watch?
Anyway it has sold for what I believe to be in the region of 拢4300

You did well to abstain. That is too much to risk for a possibly refinished dial.

Agreed. Look for one identical to either Kyle's or Adam's. Or bug the shit out of either or them to part with theirs. 馃槣

Or a fake one which are pretty good these days. I would only buy from a trusted source.

Kyle's has had dibbs on mine for the longest... 馃槜

Actually, my gilt 1016 and his sapphire crystal Explorer 1 are quite different, font-wise!
