Rolex Explorer 1016 question

Hi, I came across a 1016 Explorer which was serviced by RSC earlier this year. The seller stated the dial and hands were replaced in addition to case back. Are these service dials super luminova? If so, why does it show some yellowing/browning as I didn’t think it aged especially in a few months? Pics attached. Any comments appreciated. Thank you.

Because those hands are Tritium (note the T < 25) on the dial at 6 O’clock. Either the seller was mistaken about the dial/hands being replaced, or these are old pictures before the replacement.

I guess it’s possible the dial was not replaced, but I read that the service dials still have the T<25 below 6 even though they are luminova. I did see the RSC papers listing the hands replacement. Maybe dial was replaced years ago when they still used Tritium?

If these are indeed the pics of the actual watch for sale (I would ask for some in daylight with an iPhone and no studio conditions) it looks like the minute and second hand have been replaced with SLN hands. Which is odd to just replace those and not all 3….very un-Rolex

I’ve never heard of luminova dials referring to tritium warnings. For sure the seconds hand is not tritium. Maybe the minutes one too. Hit it with a UV light and see how everything reacts and then you’ll know for sure. To me it depends on price. If the value is good that’s one thing but there is an inherent loss of value in vintage watches when things start getting replaced

Yup. And a good relumer could relume the two hands to match the third, not the end of the world, but as you said- price needs to reflect the loss of value due to service parts.

You’re right! I missed that, because I was focused on the hour hand.

I would proceed with caution on this one- not for any lack of integrity by the seller but the pics are way to “polished”, colors don’t seem accurate, not enough pics for the sides, back, details. Lots of sins can be hidden by clever camera work. iPhone pics in the direct sunlight tend to be terrifyingly revealing.

If the seller wants your $10k, they can put a little work into satisfying your questions. If they don’t care to- they can find someone else. And if they have the RSC receipt, I would want to see a copy of it- with the serial # and they need to send you pics of the serial in the side of the case.

Thanks for all of the comments. I did see RSC receipt, but in another language. Just to close the loop, I’m passing on this watch.

smart to pass. idk if its the angle but the bottom side of the case might be too overplished as well as evident of the lug holes being too close to the bottom edge
