1959 - Rolex 9083

When I first started collecting, I saw this watch and though "who would buy such an ugly Rolex". It was small, flimsy, and its dial had gone from white textured to an awful brown. Hodinkee reviewed one and their comment was that this watch was one which didn't age well.

I kept going back and looking at it and finally decided to get it. I am fiercely independent and I wanted something no one else would ever consider getting (I am exaggerating a bit here). When I got the watch, I was surprised at how light it was. It had a feeling of being fragile and definitely not robust (had a Sea Dweller at the time).

Fast forward to today. I love everything about the watch. I love its fragile nature, the wonderful ageing of the dial ... really everything.

Well done, I dig the UFO! And agree, nice to rock a piece few others have.

Ooohh, that is really nice!

Dibs please if you ever decide that Hodinkee was right and your heart was wrong.

You can see in the next photo, that the factory finish is still visible on the case. I don't think the case has been polished, but if it has, it did not destroy the finish. But looking at the sharpness of the lugs, it appears to be factory original finish. The second photo shows the Rolex crown which is usually missing due to wear on this particular reference. On this watch there is a fair amount of wear, but not so much that original features disappear.

A very unusual piece, don'r recall seeing it before 😀
How do you feel the bracelet fits the watch? IMO it seems a bit too rugged for the case.

The bracelet is original to the watch. It was the decision of Rolex to use such a bracelet. I think it fits the look of the watch quite well. It flows well into the case. If you look at the connection point to the case, there is a tab which extends for the bracelet to attach to. I don't think an aftermarket strap would look right. If you look at pictures of other examples of this reference, I think you'll find that without exception, they all use this bracelet.

I know that it is correct, I only question the aesthetics. My stand is that it is a shame Rolex didn't opt for something more refined for a watch like this.

I guess it is a matter of personal preferences. For me, the watch is how I would prefer it to be. I'd consider a more refined strap/bracelet to be less desirable for a UFO funcky 50s watch. I think it is relatively perfect as is.
