Two years in with the Rolex Submariner 124060 no date and figured it was time to share some honest long term thoughts. Touches on the satin brushed finishing, how it ages, the no-date vs date debate, and a few considerations for anyone on the fence.
Would love to hear from others deep into ownership - does the zero color thing creep up on you over time?
Excellent review and I agree with your observations. The only points I slightly disagree with are purely subjective. I don’t see subs everywhere. In fact I’ve never seen another one where I live but I live in a rural farm community. When I go into the larger towns and cities near me I haven’t noticed many subs there either. I see one every now and then but they’re definitely not common. The shine of the ceramic dial/bezel doesn’t bother me at all. I own a bunch of Omegas with ceramic dials/bzels and I guess I’m just used to it.
I agree with you about having no regrets. I would absolutely buy it again. I was fortunate to get mine at retail and IMO it was worth every penny but I would not buy it on the gray market. As good as it is it’s not a $14000+ watch. I would not feel the same way if it had the date cyclops. In fact I doubt I would have bought the date version.
I must admit this watch exceeded my expectations. It’s not my first Rolex and it’s one of two modern Rolex watches I own. I’m an Omega fanboy and I own several modern Omega dive watches. I believe Omega dive watches are technically every bit as good or better than Rolex dive watches but there’s something about the whole Submariner package that just works. I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is but I assume it’s the result of 50+ years of steady refinement. I’m not giving up any of my Omega divers any time soon but if I were forced to have only one dive watch my no date sub would be the one I kept.
