One of the first Submariners with crown guards and one of the last, with sixty odd years between them. A 1962 gilt dial chapter ring, silver print with exclamation mark dial , pointed crown guards, factory chamfers, long 5 bezel insert on a 1962 oyster 7206 rivet bracelet. Side by side with a 2019 chromalight Maxi dial, super case, ceramic bezel on an oyster glidelock bracelet.
The DNA is obvious and looks to have gone full circle in regards to case design with the newest model.

    Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing. I haven't been a fan of the more recent versions of the submariner... a few pet peeves; I prefer tritium, love patina, hate the metal rings around the hour plots, and miss the wide bevel at the edge of the case among other reasons. I too have a 5512, circa 1961. You have one fine example. I will admit the bracelet on the new version is superior, but, considering I wear mine with out the original bracelet (rivet stretch), it's not an issue.

My choice would always be the 5512 :)
The only model, I would separate my big-triangle seamaster 300 165.024.

Thank you milwatch126 for the beautiful photos and a so interesting side-by-side comparison! Excellent. Photos sometimes really do say more than words. I guess my 1996 14060 would fit quite well in the middle...!? Cheers!

The modern one looks like an Invicta. :D

I wonder. Has the classic sub evolved or has it been adapted to today's taste in wristwatches? Large, chunky and a tad ostentatious ;) ?

Of course, the DNA is present, the technology, oozing, but aesthetically, it's all a matter of taste. In your side by side, the classic tool watch which is the 5512, dwarfs the big sub in a spectacular way.

    Cheers,

I like both of them in different ways. They are each of their era, but obviously made of the same stuff. Design-wise, I wish the modern one had a domed crystal. And of course, I wish both had dates! Thanks for the side by side. .

5512 is much nicer, the new sub isn't bad or anything but the classic elegant style of the original will never go out of fashion.

The current sub is nice too but it's just not as elegant and streamlined as it's ancestor.

    No comparison .
One is classy tasteful tool watch .The other is a brash ostentatious status symbol albeit state of the art at a price.

The maxi case is a pretty unforgivable design misstep, IMO. So much over-the-top testosterone, making the watch look like a try-hard when really, they should have known they didn't need to beef anything up on the outside. I like designs to land in a spot where geometrical forms are softened and counter balanced with more organic forms. Some yin to balance the yang.

Don't know if there's a functional imperative to have a flat sapphire crystal, but making it domed would help some. I'm a fan of the 124060, but think they need to continue trimming things down in future case iterations.

    Word !!!

Another misstep was giving the 124060 a 41mm case (and 21mm between lugs) to "compensate" for the trimming of the maxi case aka soap bar.

People complain when things change... and also when they don't.

Old or new - just pick the Sub that's right for you.

p.s. or buy something else, always an option of course.

both have pros and cons as others have said! personally I really like the vintage subs... but I also like how rolex hasn't gone down the Omega route with speedmasters, and has actively subtly evolved the sub over the years. can't please everyone all the time!

I’m a fan of both! They each tell a story!

It’s like pizza! Someone always says this pizza is the best you will ever have. I try it and say the best pizza is the one I grew up eating because it’s the one that has tastes that bring back great childhood memories!

In my humble opinion that is what is like when you compare these watches the vintage holds memories and feelings for some and others don’t get that when they look at the vintage ones therefore like me they view the newer one in a different light.

    +1 for modern sub here.
You can literally hammer a nail with new sub.
it doesn’t get more tool-watch than that.
(It also raises your “personality” score, in the club!)

pick up a modern sub and it feels ten grand.
Every other brand feels less premium in comparison.

There are 2 subs in the picture? I might have passed out after seeing the 5512...
