Thank you @watchnut for your valued input. If I move forward it will be with an offer below your $25k, unless the serial turns out to be very close.
This has been a very informative thread for anybody contemplating a DRSD, well done to all who on OF who contributed . If the deal happens I will post the "cleaned up" watch here.

It would be interesting to see how far out the numbers are and yes it would affect the value if it was ever sold. That said it sounds like you will never sell it so I would say go for it if you can have it for a good price. Good luck.

Thanks @leefowler for the very sensible words, my watchmaker is in Japan at the moment, hopefully he will know the discrepancy of the serials.
Personally when I take my "business" hat off, I am enamoured by this piece because of the provenance but I have to temper this with "others" future very astute doubt to its originality .
As mentioned earlier I will probably make a low ball offer but that will be it, as I have too many balls in the air atm.
Thank you all.
Ps What a wonderful place OF is, thank you you OF.

Congratulations on the catch, I think you have done well. As far as the chipped dial, I can't see them . Perhaps you can point them out ?
Don't be afraid to wear and enjoy this lovely watch , in my view there is no point having it otherwise.
Sorry for the late reply...! Very nice watch you have Sir. And thanks for reassuring me with my purchase, even though today it's almost 2 years in my possession already. Still one of the nicest DRSD I've seen, and the chips are really not disturbing me. They are EXACTLY at the 3 and 5 o 'clock hour marker. Small and round - check out the images.

All the best!

Argh ok I thought that might be the case! Are the numbers miles out or just not engraved on it?
Massive late reply.
It turns out the caseback numbers do match. I ended up paying $28k.
The watch has performed well since owning it.
Thanks all who contributed.
