My friends are saying they’ll watch Top Gun in his honor, but I may have to give MASH (the movie) a rewatch too.

RIP.
For me he was captain Dallas, the commander of the spaceship Nostromo in Alien (1979).

He made a brief appearance as Charlie Sheen’s rich dad in The Rookie.

The Rookie is a rarely shown and entertaining Clint Eastwood cop movie.

The kind of movie that our sergeant would sometimes pick as a “training film” when I worked on the street team in the 1990s.

“We kicked enough doors in this week. Training film” he would announce…

Who was I to argue?

RIP Viper…

I loved him in the movie Contact as the NASA administrator. The way he delvers at the party scene "Kent, let me have a word with you." Is so true to that type of manager.

I got to know the people Sagan and Druyan based the novel on, while doing the AV for the SETI confrence 'Contact, culltures of the imagination." SETI has no budget at all, so the film was being generous with what they did have. Sometimes NASA would let us use the confrence rooms at NASA Ames. Other times it was at the SETI institute itself.

So Tom's performance was spot on in ways. The press conferences etc.

Do forget he was in Top Gun, so seamlessly he blends in. And like many others remark, he will always be the Captain of the Nostromo, even if upstaged by the space jockey, Hurt and Holmes. Funny how, Ripley is Ripley and not the actress who played her. But this today is about Tom. Who will be missed.

Either you obey them or you are history. Is that clear?

I have watched Top Gun more than a 100 times I think. At one point I watched it several times a week on VHS, when I got home from school. Always loved the scene where Maverick visit Viper at home and learns about his father.

I just watched the movie Lucky. He had a small part in the movie, but his performance was powerful. What a great actor and terrible loss.

Contact is one of my favorite movies, but somehow I still remember him most as Viper.

I should find the streaming service that has Picket Fences and watch a few of them. Especially the one with the twins.
