Repurposed Omega

Hard-nosed collectors really need to get over themselves sometimes. On a 1911 pistol forum, the subforum for military pistols, some jackhole said, "this is the forum for collectors!" My response? The hell it is! Nowhere in the name or description does the forum does the word "collector" appear.

It really makes me mad when someone has a watch she really likes and some collector poops all over her enthusiasm. Congratulations, jerk!

Everyone should be welcome in this tent, from people like me who do wear Omega because of styling and quality and care zip about collectability (except when you people price things out of my market) to those who have plenty of money and plenty of expensive old Speedmasters.

For someone who has little opinion about collectibility you sure like to sound off. Personally I want nothing to do with firearms. I guess we are all different.

I think it is the case of newer members wanting the forum to be something it wasn't necessarily intended to be by those who started it/ run it. This is not a public forum run by Omega. It was founded by collectors so they could share info, and they own the forum. Just because something is on the internet doesn't mean it is for all to tailor to what they want it to be.

Is there some statement of purpose about what the forum is intended to be and for whom? DId I miss a FAQ somewhere?

I kind of like to think this forum is open to lose who love watches, regardless of brand (even though it is an Omega forum). I would LIKE to think collectors, newbies, watch lovers of all sorts are welcome. Maybe it wasn’t intended that way but I think the owners of this forum had everyone’s interest in mind, not simply collectors. I think there is a place for every watch, collectible and salvaged beater alike. Maybe I’m wrong but that is what I think.

I agree with you, yet I also respect that it is by collectors, and was intended for collectors. So when people start firing shots at collectors for their opinions on redialed watches, etc. I tend to stand behind the collectors and their honest opinions.

Lol. I have always ridden Shimano. Don’t know why but just always have.... but if you think that’s a nice ride, check out my racing bike. Trek Speed Concept 9.9 custom with DI2.

Dang! 😲

Pretty sweet! 👍

You’ve got multiple gears...I need to upgrade to multiple gears. 😁

My 2010 Schwinn Sprint fixed gear TT bike with Dura-Ace track drive train...also a Shimano guy...

without the hardnosed collectors, OF would be just another "Check out my watch" forum.
Collectors add expertise & knowledge impossible to find elswhere.

There are plenty of threads here about redials, relumes, case repairs that aren't derogatory.
Just be aware, one doesn't have to feel bad just because another disagrees.

“Honest opinions”! Why do some so readily offer opinions if they are not asked for their opinions, when someone shows an item they are proud of? I for one have long since tired of reading posts pertaining to whether some dials are original, or whether they have been refinished. That the owner likes it is (in my view) all that is important. “Standing behind the collectors and their honest opinions”. Aren’t we all collectors?

I'm an "accumulator". True collections are curated, where the best of the best are sought and the pieces are chosen for some significance.

I have a bunch of different Omega watches beccause I like them and there is no theme and no curation. I just like wearing them. I have others too.

Accumulator...now that’s a more accurate description of what I tend to be doing. I have a couple very collectible pieces followed by some interesting pieces followed by things I just like. Maybe we are watch hoarders.

Ok, yes I know it’s not collectible. In fact, it was downright fugly. This 351 bumper had been redialed. It had hideous green lume. We have seen examples. The redial was old though because it was radioactive as hell. I had a plan for this watch, picked it up cheaply and sent it off for a $69.00 relume job. I picked aged lume. It’s not worth anything but I just couldn’t let a good movement die and it’s fun as heck to beat around wearing. Plus the feel of a bumper on your wrist is sublime. Anyway I’m sure purists here will take shots at it but I like wearing the damn thing as an everyday work watch and I actually like the looks. Believe it or not, it gets more compliments at work than my Sub.

I don't see how any reasonable person could possibly object to taking something that was neither original nor attractive and making it look much better. And I'm one of those "purists".

That's among the worst re-lume jobs I've seen in a while. The hands looks OK from a distance, but the index are terribly ugly.
I like the idea of repurposing the watch, nothing wrong with that. But next time pick a more qualified watchmaker...
