Regulating Cal.565

I’m putting back together a Cal.565 and having some issues in the crown right position. Original mainspring and getting the following in DU and DD: +0 250 0.0

However with the balance above and below the pallet fork I get poor and very poor results.

I’ve found the hairspring is touching the regulator pin when at rest which might suggest either an issue with the hairspring, some other issue or just a need to adjust.

However I can’t find anything on how I can potentially adjust the hairspring position in the regulators. On a Seiko I’d twist the stud to get a better angle but on the 565 the stud is fixed. There is a screw on the regulator but I have no idea what adjustment that gives me and I’d like to triple check before I start undoing anything.

Does that screw just allow for regulator pin rotation and therefore closing up the pins. Or would it also allow some in/out movement to let me centre the hairspring?

The screw on the regulator just opens up the regulator boot to allow the balance to be removed. To center the spring in the regulating pins, you have to do it the old fashioned way - manipulate with tweezers. Tread carefully...

Ah. Crap! Thanks for letting me know. I have repaired a balance spring before but not on such a nice movement.

Appreciate the inputs. I have massaged the hairspring from the stud to center it in the regulator pins and I’m already seeing improvements.

It still needs a bit more work as I can see the terminal curve is not perfectly centered on the regulator pins all the way though the adjustment but I’ll save that for another time and just see how it performs on the wrist for now.

DU, CL and CR. If I ignore the -9 then I have the delta down to 16 which is a massive improvement to where it was before.

The amplitude drop is still a worry give the beat error is pretty tight across all the positions tested.

Reviving this thread as I’m further down the road with this 565 movement but I need some advice from the Omega experts.

The latest updates are that I’ve upgraded my setup a lot and also spent a lot more time with the movement. I’ve now got a trinocular scope (no camera unfortunately) and it’s revealed a few issues. The original clean I did was not good enough. So the parts and specifically jewels are now all spotless.

However doing some testing has revealed major issues with the balance. Free oscillation test was 57s DU and DD but 23-30 seconds in the vertical positions. I’m waiting for a 2x lens for the scope but it looks like the balance is toast, so once I confirm that diagnosis, I’m potentially going to put a new balance staff in it which I can luckily source from eBay.

Also 1 of my chatones is rough. It has what looks like pitting around the hole, plus the end stone has a dimple. So I’m contemplating buying a replacement balance cock with its end stone. Which is where I get to my questions.

1. Are the chatones the same top/bottom? I might put them on a micrometer to check but worried I will crush/crack them. I don’t know if my top or bottom stone is the damaged one

2. Are the chatone springs the same top/bottom? I lost the bottom one and replaced it with one from cousins. But the colour bothers me and I want to make this restoration as OEM as possible.

3. The balance cock I’m looking at has a recessed section (end of the pointer) whereas my current one doesn’t. This worries me, is it not correct for the year or model of 565 I have? Can someone confirm? Pics below. Worst case I don’t use the plate but just just use all the hardware which appears to be in much better condition than mine (corrosion). I mostly need it for the chatone which I’m struggling to find.

Mine:

The other option I have is to buy a chatone on its own and look to polish the regulator arm. I’m in the process of making a lapping setup so I can fix a lot of the screws. I likely could superglue this to the bottom of that and polish it up.

Does this webpage suggest that the chatone, end jewel and spring are the same in the top and bottom jewels?

Yes.
That’s excellent news. Thanks Archer!

Also I assume with balance end shake, that’s adjusted with the main plate chatone? Should the spring be trapped in the mount? Mine can be removed and I have way too much end shake on the balance wheel which suggests it needs to be pushed down a little.

I would check the balance staff fist...

Mine is definitely showing some signs of damage however I’m waiting on a 2x lens for my microscope before I can absolutely confirm. The ends look ok but it looks like some weird markings on the sides.

My DU/DD amplitude is ok for an original mainspring (245) but it takes a nose dive on any upright position.

This is what I’m trying to confirm if it’s damage with better magnification.

I’m planning on tooling up for a staff replacement plus I’m also going to replace one of the end jewels because that also doesn’t look perfect.

The pivot definitly looks to be damaged, unless it's just reflections.

Are the cap jewels worn in the centre at all?

Yes. One of them has pitting around the pivot hole and the end stone has a divot.

Hence why I’m not happy putting it back in and I’m getting a replacement.

I wouldn't move any jewels until you resolve the other items.

Does anyone know the history on the casting at the base of the regulator arm? Is it appropriate for my 565 to use this different bridge design or should I keep the one I have. My movement is generally in excellent shape but the balance staff and this balance bridge are pretty rough. Wondering if someone maybe swapped them at some stage.

I don’t care about the originality of this exact movement, as long as it’s 565 correct and good condition.

The bridge in the post directly above is what it should look like. The one further up that has no finishing or the graduations is very odd…

Do you have a micrometer to measure the thickness of both bridges and see if one had been filed/ground down?

Sure do. Once the new one shows up I’ll crack out the Mitutoyos and see if they differ at all
