Regarding 5513 Online Dial Guides

Hello OF,

I have gotten into this hobby relatively recently and have been picking up knowledge here and there on the internet.
I saw many people refer to this website for "rules" on 5513 matte dials.
http://www.5513mattedial.com/About.html

How credible is this website? I have never heard of the creator nor the people he mentions.
I don't want to blindly trust random people on the internet, but I also don't have the resources to determine for myself what is "correct".
(I wish they also wrote about how they've collected data and how reliable they believe their data to be.)

Unlike Omega, where things seem to be documented very well, vintage Rolex seems "loose" in their documentation.
(Vintage Rolex seems like the "Wild West" of the watch world.)
I sometimes wonder where the confidence of so called experts come from.
Could it be that the rich get to just determine what is correct? Or is there actual evidence behind the common knowledge out there?

Welcome to the Forum. I hope your 79 posts since Sunday are in fact due to your new love of collecting and not to reach 200 in record time.

This happens frequently.

The Matte Dial is a well known resource. You can try this book also. Have fun with the new hobby.

Beaumont Miller is one of the most knowledgeable subject matter experts when it comes to subs. His site is well researched and is widely accepted among the collector community. You can also follow him on IG, I'd have no reservations.

In what way are vintage Omega watches better documented than Rolex? It seems to me that, in both cases, we mainly rely on research done by other knowledgeable collectors, books, etc., to know what is correct and original. Perhaps it just seems to you that Rolex is the Wild West because you haven't yet learned as much about Rolex watches.

Love that book and its hardcover cousin. Great tables especially. GMTMaster 1675.com and Mattdial.com are excellent resources. OP does not appear to be asking frivolous questions or post farming IMO. In fact he’s poking at some of the same conundrums most of us have run up against with a brand that one would assume had a more well documented history than it does.

You are correct Larry. We communicated. And sometimes there is a good reason for going too fast.

A classic. I amended my response a bit more.

Thanks very much for that response.
I wasn't aware of the website for 1675s.
This will be a great resource for me when I start hunting for one in the near future (hopefully). Cheers.
