Of course as you point out time is indeed money , and how well a watch is repaired is a very subjective thing.

Not really. What is acceptable timekeeping to one collector compared to another can certainly vary, but what constitutes a proper service is not subjective at all. There are very objective standards for performance of the watch, cleanliness, correct oiling, and when a part should be replaced or used again, etc.

As most of us aren't in a position to properly judge the quality of work done

That I agree with, and is one reason I'm here posting the things I post. The fact that a watch keeps good time is no guarantee that the service was done properly.

Whether the watch is tested and adjusted in 5 positions is something we're unlikely to ever know (unless we ask). Perhaps we need to have more repair notes with the final bill.

Be an informed consumer. Do your research to understand what goes into a proper service, and don't just go in blindly. Would you let someone repair your car with a quote that says "Service car = $XXX" and no other detail?

As for repair notes, there are some watchmakers who will post photos of various stages of the work - again these are the things you should pay attention to in order to understand if they are doing things correctly. Personally I provide a comprehensive report of the work with every watch I service - these can sometimes run 80 pages with 2 photos per page, depending on the watch. But this is a very different level of service to the guys charging 150 Euros...

Cheers, Al

Not to revive a thread... but...

Anyone know a good watchmaker in Germany? Haha

I'm looking for one south of Frankfurt; in the Kaiserslautern area but am willing to train.
