No more tanks tonight. Another 3 star 7001 benrus, SS case, bright linen dIal, pips are a little dark but all there, red second hand. Apparently a little moisture on the dial by the crown, looks like a shadow but seller mentions it. Make a offer on this- it’s lovely.

Poppin fresh 1952 GP Bulova with sensational dial. That dial is bright and airy looking with creamy lume pips . Case looks nice with little wear and at 33mm it’s a nice size.

Whoops- not a BIN, my mistake- someone see if they would take an offer. Need to go to bed.

Certina DS!! Stainless case with those lovely twisted lugs, dial has typical patina (damage) that we see on these (which is don’t understand- weren’t these supposed to be really waterproof?!?!) and needs a crystal but apparently running. Don’t know enough about these to say if the crown and the back are correct but they look appropriate and back has wear commensurate with the case.

I thought "DS" referred to a screw-down crown in addition to the caseback gasket, but I was wrong:

Explained briefly, the DS movement encased entirely in an elastic shock absorber ring resembling an O-ring gasket, which absorbs the kinetic energy released by vibration and shocks. In addition, a fine cushion of air is set between the dial and the case, enabling the movement to move in all directions. The dial itself is protected by thick Plexiglass. The reinforced back is claimed to be virtually inalterable.

As for water resistance, in 1959 it is tested and guaranteed down to 200m. Hence the name DS, standing for Double Security, guaranteed both robust and waterproof. A patent protecting the floating movement concept is filed in 1958.

In 1968 Certina came out with the DS2, which sported a "twin-seal crown." Still not clear if that meant screw-down. So yes, Certinas were advertised as really waterproof, but so were the hordes of '60s and '70s cheap dive watches--few of which had screw-in crowns.

Ok, tank day bleeds over a little-
This is a very nice Benrus tank. Seller says serviced and “mint”- but I think the later may be a bit of hyperbole. I see a spec or two on the dial but this is by far one of the cleaner ones I have seen. Apparently the stretchy is also original, that I believe as they were rather popular and a dealer option (although he says one of the links is stretched out). Slap it on leather or something fun (suede) and rock this little guy- also he says make offer.

Waffle dial SS Bulova. Last time I saw a waffle dialed Bulova this nice was in my watch box this morning 😉

1954, about as pretty as they come. A little funk around some of the indices but they really don’t get much better- unless you pay far more like I did for mine.

On the high side for value thread but this is worth showing.
Tissot PR 516 with a stunning blue dial that has not flaked off to hell! What makes this special is not only the stunning blue dial that is not trying to migrate back to Switzerland, but the nearly perfect bezel and ....wait for it ....the stainless racing bracelet- this thing is a time capsule. Rarely do we see them like this, and that is worth a premium. Also says make offer so let’s see who can steal this thing.

Another on the high side but again, worth a look.
SS Hamilton tuxedo dialed Auto. This is probably late 50’s, the case looks sharp and not dressed up for sale, probably polished and back rebrushed long ago but done well. Crystal could use a polish obviously but the dial is stunning. Concentric inner section, raised hour marker track in contrasting black and the outer stepped ring has perfect bright yellow pips that match the hands- this is an eye catching watch. Also love the vintage mesh bracelet, probably not factory but would be a pleasant surprise if it is.

The thread title says "good value" and their certainly fits the bill. It is a very good value for the money, plus they take offers.

Agreed- I rarely see 516’s in that shape, and with blue dial and bezel that good- never.

If you are sitting on the sidelines thinking that these vintage watches are too small, buy this one. I don't care what people say, 35mm is plenty big for any man. This watch exudes class, something a 50s jazzman would wear.

Cheap beater diver in AU! This thing ain’t pretty, but it’s got its cred and it’s all there. Plated case is well worn, but not trashed. Dial is haggard, but not shot. Crystal is tattered, but could be sanded out. This has potential.

Got it. The story:
Right out of the box I was unable to wind it, so I opened it up. Turns out the seller, after taking the movement shot, had replaced the retaining ring incorrectly so it pushed against the stem. I fixed that and it wound easily. Timegrapher performance was poor (+225 s/d), so I spent some time adjusting it and got it to +1 s/d. Amplitude is good at 270. There was a large piece of lint on the dial, so I removed the watch from the case and blew off the dial. The dial is 100% flawless, and the markers gleam as though it came off the line yesterday. A quick buff of the crystal and it's ready to rock. Shown below with a gratuitous Devin Thomas gyuto.

This one's my favorite so far of the thread. Well done.

I totally agree this is a lovely piece but just to be clear this particular watch is ~ 32mm.

edit: false news, it is 35mm.

If that was a UK sale and not subject to £150 of additional postage and import tax I think I’d hit the BIN. Blue dial - check, clean bezel - check, OG metal racing bracelet - Buy It Now.

When I got up this morning, I couldn't believe the amount of feedback I got on that odd little piece overnight. Seems to be your responsibility @JwRosenthal 😀 Thanks for that, awaiting a final reply from another kind user, the Anker is then OHPF. I'm really happy it stays in the OF-family and I might see it once in a while in the WRUW.
