bakelite bezel seems amazing...and the dial does as well, considering how these types have aged.

not exactly a rock bottom bargain price at 600, but the condition is much better than many examples

Yeah, it’s got an eta as well- this is what bargain dreams are made of. The price is a little higher than we normally associate with these “bargain” divers, but they are going up. The patchy/moldy lume and worn lettering on the dial is the only thing keeping it from my collection....and the fact that I’m trying to reel it in.
Please someone buy this before I cave.

 

it's very doubtful the lume looks bad to the naked eye as opposed to the images that are highly magnified

 

If it had a concave bezel like a Captain Cook, the price would be much higher, even with the obscure branding. To me, that bezel looks flat.

Agreed. But on the spectrum of “bargain” divers, this pegs the meter for cool factor- plus stainless case, Eta movement, grey not black) dial, all lume intact even on hands....seriously tempted.

 

It's a nice watch. I would have bought it normally. But I'm saving my money for another watch.

Same, was even getting ready to make an offer when it first popped up, but it just didn't jive with me.

Plus mine isn't selling, so I feel bad adding another without that happening first.

 

Looking at the seller's other items, they're another person with access to the guy who makes the "bakelite" bezels and puts them on everything...

I still really wish I could get that guys contact info, they do look nice and would be a fun thing to have.

 

Shipping from New Zealand to the States or Europe isn't very expensive - so you should keep an eye on our equiv of eBay - Trade Me. I just picked up the Bulova 666 'Devil Diver' and Tissot Seastar with Lemania movement shown below for well less than half the USD cost of similar examples on eBay, etc... link to Men's watches below and there is vintage sub-category...

Oh- is the bezel a fake? I have seen some of these Bakelite repro bezels in random watches but didn’t know where they weee coming from

Pretty darn certain, just based on all the other watches they've sold. And it looks really similar to the same ones that always show up on random watches.

 

Ugh! Yet another thing to watch out for. I agree though, if they used that power for good and not evil (offering a nice Bakelite bezel on its own as an alternative to those with worn out or missing bezels, as opposed to trying to put a Franken together and pass it off as real), it would be a nice to have parts alternative.

I'll take that as a compliment @JwRosenthal ! I shouldn't promote Trade Me really as all the good deals might head off to the States! There's a nice Bulova Accutron Astronaut that I'm also (h)uummming about at equiv of USD 700 or so....

 

i think you're right. but usually they're put on the wrong watch. this one goes with it.
