When I first dipped my newbie toe into vintage watches, I was advised by sage and wizened collectors to look for steel cases (limits the problems with flaking chrome or gold plate), dials with applied indices and logos (limits the exposure to redials), and to time-only movements from the 1950s and 1960s.
Here are two examples of unpolished Tissot Seastars from the late 1950s with robust full-rotor automatic movements and fancy indices, priced around USD $150:
