It's from Florida so it has traversed the digestive tract of an alligator, not a crocodile. Best to keep them straight.

Both make lovely straps

I would have thought they lacked the brain power and opposing thumbs to craft straps.

Not entirely sure but I think the Alligator in Dave K's image is a prehistoric ancestor of modern gators. Near 40 feet long it ate medium sized dinosaurs.
