The majority of US watches posted on this thread - and yes, I’m looking at you; Bulova, Benrus, Elgin, Waltham and Wyler (and I hope I’ve got that right) - all seem to be teensy 33mm watches. Pretty enough but too small even for my skinny wrists.

Why did the US manufacturers make these small size watches when the Swiss models we covet were nearly all 34/34.5mm?

I suppose Americans back in the day had some class about them. Ha 😀

Sadly Ebays 'global shipping program' doesn't quite ship globally so I can't buy the majority of American offers, being in the EU myself. It's a pity because I have no problem wearing 31mm or so watches, which tend to come in at great price points due to lower demand.

As I said, I’ve got skinny wrists but I thought I could wear smaller happily.

I paid a noob tax, buying a 31/32 Garrard which was far too small and I never wore it.

I feel for you mate. Just box it up and send it to me and I'll dispose of it so you won't have to ever see it again.

And didn't feel they had to make up for any shortcomings.
Few things irritate me more than a gawky big watch that hangs up on a pocket or slams crystal first against a door frame. I don't like leaving a sleeve unbuttoned to see my watch at a glance.

HI
My best guess.... before WWII just about everyone was making " smaller " sized mens watches.... Due to USA entry to the war, all watch manufactures went to full war time production, no civilian products were produced.

The Swiss was netural during the watch and had multiple production lines for military and civilian production...
advances in waterproof watches influcned in part by war time production etc....

After WWII the US Watch and clock making industry as a hole never really bounced back to pre war days... that could lead to the major lag in change of styles etc... of watch design...

Just a thought

Good Hunting
