I was following this watch in a rural USA sale room. There were several watches that I had low bids on, and I won nothing, although I did try quite hard for this.

It has a lot of peripherals with it, but I could not see a numbered Omega Guarantee.

Still I liked it. Not perfect, but it was nice.

The case back was very sharp, but the bracelet was quite tired, and did not really match the condition of the case.

The watch sold for $29,000

The unusual thing about the auction was that the bid was the price paid, no hidden fees or premiums. I like that.

The market is all over the place now. A few weeks ago I sold my last 2998-5 for US $ 10000 cheaper. No box. No papers. But still.... And yesterday sold my last Rolex Sub PCG 1963 in excellent condition again around US $ 10000 under value. Only keep one Rolex Mil. Sub and 2 Tudors. Done with Rolex in the moment. Even rare 1930's Longines are out.... Let's see, where the market turns to. Achim

Having the same ID here and on eBay should make it easy to find the listings. And anything outside eBay is 10% cheaper anyway and we can always talk here without the eBay police. Might list the next Ed White here as well.....

This particular house is a favorite of mine as most items go under market, they dont do a good job getting the word out and famously have many glitches in their bidding. (I would not consign with them but like to buy when possible). I suffered on of the glitches yesterday, or a really quick hammer, on a 145-012 that closed literally 1sec after I was outbid. There is a 30sec rule that is supposed to be in play but the people who bid in person seem to always have an advantage at this auction.

....and I actually just got an email from the auction house apologizing for the problems, they say the place they held the auction (hotel in NH) had poor internet and had issues with remote bidding. ::facepalm1:: 2021?!?

Edited to add; thanks for the info Achim, now following you as an ebay seller..... looking forward to the EW! (Its on my list currently)

Seems like people are getting excited about the Royal Oak and Nautilus; no tool watch aspect to those at all just pure bling. To me they are a bit of an acquired taste, like an Aston Martin Lagonda.

Genuinely surprised the market for 60's Heuer isn't through the roof. Those watches are fantastic. They look great, and with the incredible Valjoux 72 and 92 movements there's real horological royalty there.

I did see those Achim, maybe you will have better luck at a small USA auction house 🙄

I think the vintage market is definitely soft at the moment for some, and hot for others, but I can never figure out which!

This is a nice kit but absent the original guarantee booklet I would not really put a full premium on the B&P., although it should still add some value, of course. As you mention, with the bracelet being seemingly more worn than the actual watch (though these flat links are not exactly built to last), the whole package could be put together as likely as all original whatever the auction house spiel.

Strong money after a lot of relative softness in the market for these to be sure and two asides that have been spurred in my mind by this example & review of same:

-It surprises me that these later iterations of 2998-4,-5,-6,-61,-62 sans the dagger sub-register hands are priced the same as the 2998-3 (all other factors being equal), when those sorts of reference specific details/changes tend to upvalue nearly every other collectible vintage watch in terms of backward chronology.

-I do believe the expectation that a Tachy bezel on a 50+ year old Speedy should be absolutely pristine is not a realistic one for the most part and, in fact, if you find a perfect DON insert on an otherwise normally used Speedmaster of that era that would send up flags to me that it had been replaced more recently.

YMMV & best,
T.

let’s wait and see the result of the upcoming auctions in Geneva. It might be soft for poor condition examples but I’m predicting good original pieces are still in demand and will attract good money.

...Which begs the question, into which category do you think the Geneva watches fall?

I’m expecting some mixed results with the Phillips watches coming out on top and achieving a strong price.

To my mind $29,000 with no additional fees seems a pretty good price for the watch and overall package. Even if the vintage market has softened a bit I predict that we will see much poorer examples go for more money. I think it is an attractive watch but can understand why there might be some question marks (aren’t there always ?)

congratulations to the buyer.
